Easy. First captian John E. Smith made the ship go full steam ahead in a ice field. Which was stupid. 2nd there were only 16 lifeboats. The original plan was to be I think 32 lifeboats but in those days noone really cared. 3rd most of the lifeboats left half full. 4th when the Titanic struck the ice berg it did not make a big hole in the side as in the movie. Instead when the ship tryed to turn and scraped the side it popped all the little screws holding the ship together 10 feet all together I belive which caused the lower boiler rooms to fill very quickly with water. Also the ship broke in half. That was because the ship's bottom scraped the side of the ice which popped the rivets in the bottom which made the top of the iron basically sear off and exposed the cold metal to the frigid cold water which made the weight of the ship as it was balancing in it's final moments make everything slide down to the bow of the ship(part that was in the water) and when it went down it split in half and sank within 15 minutes and the two halves ended up 100 miles from each other on the bottom of the Ocean floor. Also when the ship went down neone who was near enough to the ship was sucked down with the ship due to the amount of force and weight of the ship. And then everyone else in the water froze to death. And I am not sure on this but I think the third class passengers were locked on the lower decks. |

i agree...rent the movie..there's like 4 different versions...from the very old "A Night to Remember"...to the one 10 years ago TITANIC....the last surviving American (and the only one to remember it) just died this year in the next town from me....2 more are still alive in England..however one was like 6 weeks old and one was like 6 or 9 months old back then....anyway the lady who lived near me never spoke about it to anyone because her mother went into shock and begged her 2 surviving kids never to talk about it...this woman who was 99 never did...which is too bad...and kind of selfish of her mother...but anyway a whole bunch of things went wrong right from the get go.....because it was such a new ship and the biggest one ever to that date...people thought it was unsinkable...(never assume)....so the guy who ran the Shipping Company told the Captain to go faster than normal because he wanted to impress everyone in US...the Captain didn't want to but he did it....well they had lookout towers and were told that icebergs had been seen earlier by other ships during the day (by morse code)....but apparently they didn't see them until it was too late....so when they tried to stop but were going too fast...the rudders had been made too small and didn't manuever as well.so they couldnt steer out of the way...but if the rudders were bigger like they should have been it possibly would have had enough time to go around it instead of ramming it like a tin can plus they didn't have all the life boats they should have....they figured it would give them more room if they left some out because of course the ship would never sink!...and then like someone else said...the richer people were put on first and only half the amountwere put in that should have been....the poor were kept down below like slaves...then when they shot off the emergency flairs they were the wrong color..they were the party color and not the red ones...and there was a ship not far off on the in the distance witness's said..but paid no attention..the theory is is because they figured it was the Titantic and it must have been a party ....then when a ship did take them seriously the Carpathia..it was 4 hours away..the ship went down in 2 and because it was so cold..the ones that didn't die from fallen objects froze like popscicles...too bad it was up north off of Nova Scotia..and not say in the south like Miami!....and then the lifeboats that did take off...didn't come back after the ship went down (I think there were 12 boats)..but they could have went back and picked up more people but they were afraid the others would panic and make their boat sink...only 2 boats went back to look but after it was too late..only a handful of people managed to stay alive...so a lot of things went against the ship...but now because of them...every ship has enough lifeboats and life presevers and when on a ship they do a fire drill.... |

froze to death in the frozen waters for one thing. drowned as well and died from a form of hypothermia. |

The designer of the ship didn't want lifeboats cluttering up the look of the ship, so there were far too few to accomodate everyone. And the water was freezing cold, so swimmers didn't last long enough for outside help to arrive. |

Few reasons:
People (especially of lower classes) were locked away in parts of the boat and never got to escape.
There was not enough life boats for everybody on board as having enough would apparantly "waste room". |

Back then, there also wasn't a Coast Guard or rescue helicopters that could respond quickly enough to save the victims from the freezing water. |

they did have enough life boats, but they assured the passengers that everything would be okay. so they first class got out with a bunch of seats empty, and at the last minute they had to load the third class. |

They did not have enough lifeboats, the water was freezing and so was the temperature outside, and most of third class couldn't even find their way up to the boat deck to get on the lifeboats, and by the time they did, most boats were already gone. |

They got hurt from the stuff that broke off the ship. They couldn't swim and drowned, and they stayed too long in the water and froze to death. Also, ppl were locked up in the lower parts and noone unlocked them. |

People would go on the lifeboats and drop before they were full and then there weren't enough because of that. Alot more would have lived if it wasn't for those peeps. |

There were many factors. There were not enough life boats. They only accepted women and children. Then sent the life boats out half full for fear they would sink, Lower classes were to be borded last which never happened cause the ship was sinking and higher class were snobby. |

Titanic
The Titanic is a very famous ship. In 1912 it was new. It was the biggest ship in the world. It was also very beautiful and expensive. People said that it was very safe.
On April 12, 1912, it started to go on its first trip. It left Southampton, England. It was going to New York. It had over 2,200 people on it. There were 1,310 passengers and 898 crew.
On April 14, at night, there was a lot of fog. It was hard to see. The boat went very fast. It hit an iceberg. In only 2 ½ hours the boat sank. There were not enough lifeboats. Many people had to swim, but the water was very cold. 1,503 people died in the cold water.
For many years, the Titanic lay at the bottom of the ocean. Then, a few years ago, some people found the Titanic. They went down under the water. They saw the ship. People were very interested in the Titanic. They wanted to know more about it. |
