They work on most ships, but you will pay a premium fee
The real question is: why take your cell phone on a cruise in the first place... the whole point of cruising is to get away
Ryan S
yes. most of the new ships can provide service. the catch is in the fees. i went on one and texted the whole time. when i got home each text message was $3.50. my phone bill was more than i spent on the cruise. i would not use your phone ever. if you need to contact someone or be contacted the ship has its own phone

Usually it will, but it will be expensive as use will have to go via the ships satellite system.
While in port, or within range of the port's cell your phone might work through the local system. Depends who your supplier is and whether the system is compatible with the local system.
Given the idea of a cruise is to get away from it all I suggest you leave your phone at home.

I work on various Cruise ships (P&O,Princess and Ocean Village) and on most of these ships it is a yes, as they have installed systems to receive your signal and send it off the ship via the satellites etc and you can also receive calls, but there is a supplement for this but it will not be charged by the cruise ship just in a higher rate for calls.
I would suggest that you contact all of the companies your thinking of going with and see if the service is available and which of their ships its on.

I have never taken one on a cruise ship but my friend did this summer and she was able to txt me and send me pics and what not.
I am not sure if it costs extra but I have heard that it works on many ships.
