Carnival. They are cheaper, don't charge a lot of extras after you are on board, and I have never had a bad cruise with them. Despite what some people will say, I have never seen the ship full of drunks. There are areas where people will get loud, but they are on vacation. If you don't want that, there are plenty of other places to go. It is a big ship.

I am 50 years old and have been a 5 Carnival cruises. They tend to be geared towards a younger crowd with a lot of on board activities with that in mind. There is a lot of drinking and partying late into the night. If that is what you want to do then Carnival is the ship. (I guess I haven't decided to get old yet)

If you want to party, go with Carnival. If you want something quieter, go with Royal.

I think both are good. The staterooms are bigger on Carnival and nicer. Lot's of partying on both.

Stay away from Royal. I repeat STAY AWAY from them. Thier rooms are tiny and service was ok. Just Okay. I went back to Carnival and never ever ever had a single problem. Food on Carnival was just the best. Nothing ghetto about it.It is less expensive- more to do on board and just fantastic.
Royal Caribbean was the hugest disappointment. They were downright nasty!

I have been on carnival and royal caribbean, and royal caribbean is way better. I definitely recommend them, you wont be disappointed. Contrary to what people think royal caribbean ships aren't quiet, I partied more on there than I did on carnival. On royal caribbean ships there is always something to do, whether it be ice skating, salsa lessons, steel drum lessons, or watching a movie in the theater. There are multiple activities to suit everyones taste, and unlike carnival, they don't cost extra.

Ok, I've worked on cruise ships for 5 years. I've called Royal and Carnival home for quite some time and, of course, there are pros and cons to each.

In general for either line you'll want to consider the following factors. You are around my age so I think you'll want to know this. Most cruises that are longer than 7 days are going to have an older clientele since younger people usually aren't able to take off work for longer than that. Generally, your shorter cruises (3 to 5 days) are going to be signifcantly younger in age and also more "party" cruises. If the cruise falls over the weekend, this also tends to make it more of a party cruise.

No matter which line you choose, the newer the ship the happier you'll be. The newer ships have many more amenities such as extra clubs and resturants and plasma screens. The quality of the shows are usually much higher also and the better performers are generally asked to go to the newer ships.

Comparing Royal and Carnival: Carnival is cheaper, but the service and crew hospitality is not as good. The Royal ships are also, I think, so much more beautiful than the Carnival ships with all the glass to see the ocean and the quality of materials used in construction. Carnival ships look...well, gaudy!

While both lines can be very fun and party ships, Carnival definately has the upper hand here. The activities staff on Carnival is much wilder and gets the guests to do crazier things than their Royal counterparts. On the other hand, Royal does have rock climbing walls which Carnival does not. Also, if you choose one of the newer Royal ships they can also include ice skating rinks, in-line skating tracks, a full volleyball and basketball court, a REAL minature golf course and more which Carnival does not.

Hmm, a lot to consider, huh? Put simply: If you want to get obliterated drinking and be crazy, choose Carnival. If you still want to party but also have a more rounded cruise experience, choose Royal. Hope this helps.

P.S. - if you can choose an itenerary that goes to San Juan, I highly recommend it. After 5 years around the world, it is still one of my favorite spots. Visit the resturant Barrachina in old town San Juan. It is the birthplace of the Pina Colada and some nights you can catch a real Flaminco Show!

I've never been on either, but I've heard Carnival is the most ghetto of all cruise lines.

Since your my age, your most likely looking for some fun. Go with Carnival. The food is great and the clubs are so much fun. If you looking for quiet, go with royal.
