Worried about sea sickness!?!?

Hi! I'm going on a cruise in Jan., 2007, this will be my 1st cruise ever!! I'll be on the Ecstasy (carnival) and i'm worried about getting sea sickness. I have gotten sick before when i got on a airplane... so i'm trying to determine if I should take dramamine before I get on the ship, and if I would feel the boat moving much. Thank you for your answers.

Each person is different. I've never had a problem on the cruise and I've been on some pretty rocky cruises. But, I've taken friends that never had problems getting sick and had a problem on the boat.

Because of the size of the ships and the stabalizers they have, you don't feel the boat moving much. However, since you are going in the winter, there is a chance that water will be worse than usual. Winter can be bad because of cold fronts moving in causing rocky waters.

The best thing to do is bring the medicine just in case. Go to your pharmacy and ask them what they recommend, get something that can work pretty quick. If you are worried, you can buy a patch or the wrist band and just wear it in case. If you get onboard and see the water is calm, try going without it, but keep it with you just in case. The ship will have some available, but it is a good idea to bring some with you in case.

My sisters wedding was on a yacht... I tried Sea-Bands and took ginger tablets. The combination worked for me.

congrats, most of the time you wont even feel that you are on the ship its like a big floating mall theres so many things to do but my advice about the dramamine is if you do take it you will be very sleepy the day you take it. it knocks you out for at least 8 to 10 hours. i thought that i was going to be sick my first time but the only time i got sick was with a mixture of choclate and rum too much sweets. you might feel the ship move slightly depending where you state room is (thats what the call that rooms) so all in all dramamine kind of works but usually you dont feel the ship the same way you feel a plane through turbulence

I am also going on a carnival cruise to the bahammas, first time like you!!! I am going in a few days and although i asked the same question on here about motion sickness like you as i was and still am a little freaked out that i will feel the boat move and get real sick..I didnt get much yahoo answers on this so i turned to .a lot of people i know and they told me to take boninne(over the counter) instead of dramamine. dramamine will make you drowsy. Do not take the motion sickness pills until a while after you board as you have to board at least 2 hours early and you would have to take the pills 30 minutes before you sail. for them to work properly . I , also know that you can get a motion sickness shot from the medical staff on board ifor extreme cases. it will be around 100.00 and not recommened unless you are throwing up, otherwise bonine will be just fine and under 10.00... and take sleeping pills at night if you feel you will get nervous and will not be able to sleep. I was also told to be either on the 2nd or 3rd floor for your stateroom in the middle, less rocking if you hit turbulence but i heard they have stablizers on the ship so it will hardly rock unless there is a storm and then you will not be the only one getting sick. e-mail me after june 21st and i will tell you everything about my first time...chantrella8@yahoo.com

You are not likely to get sea sick because ships have very little motion, much less than airplanes. I suggest that you buy the dramimine or get a patch from your doctor before you go just in case. Or you can try wearing one of the wrist bracelets for seasickness. Check this web site:

You won't feel as much movement on the ship as in an airplane. The larger the vehicle, the less movement you'll feel! I would recommend holding off on the meds until after you are on board for at least 30 minutes. That will give you body time to adjust. If you feel like you may start getting sick, focus on an object far away, like the horizon. Motion sickness comes from your senses fighting each other - your eyes see one thing, (like the deck, which looks like it is perfectly still), and your inner ear registers another (movement from the vehicle). Good luck and have fun!

My first cruise was on a smaller ship and I was surprised to find out I was VERY sick. I went to the guest relations desk and got some tablets and was fine once I took them. (Maybe a little tired)My second cruise I tried the patches behind my ears. I felt they made me very very tired and I didn't enjoy my cruise as much as I should have. Third and fourth, I didn't take anything and did absolutely fine. No sea sickness-no problems at all! I would recommend getting on and seeing how you do. Only take something if you need to. Relax! You'll be fine!

First off it really depends on whether or not there are any major storms where you are heading. My advice would be go see your doctor before the cruise and ask them to perscribe the patch for motion sickness. Dramamine would most likely make you drowsy and you would have to take it continuoulsy the whole trip (which I do not advise). Also beaware mixing certain motion sickness medicines with alcholol can have side effects. So again see your doctor and be advised the price of a motion sickness injection from the ships physician is a little over $100.
