Would it be wise to buy a boat of your dream after 50 years & sail across the islands w/out experience at all?

Help! My best friend gonna be buying the boat of his dream very soon and wants to sail across the islands.. say from one country to the other. I suggested to him to rent first and try sailing for a month or two and find out if it's really what he likes to do. He hasn't even tried sailing at all ever since his life yet he's very much confident that he can do it.
He plans to do sailing for maybe at least for the next 10 years or so.

He may know how to swim but he hasn't even tried diving and not even a regular swimmer at all. Not even that I see who's so physically fit as he's not really that sporty kind of guy. He's so obsessed of the kind of life in his dream boat that he would really like to explore.

I have searched everything about the pros and cons. But he never listen. People who care for him really so concerned of his immediate plan of sailing before he can even learn to do so.

- Is sailing really that easy to learn?
- How long do you need to experience to be able to sail far across the oceans?
- Also, do you need permit when crossing from one country to the other? He insisted it is not necessary as he owns the sailboat.

Sailors.. please help!

You have tryed picking on him without results so try the other way around and try to talk with him what he needs instead. You dont have to be a world class swimmer or an educated diver to go on sailing but you would like some sort of seamanship school. I would try to talk him into going shorter distances first for the education and then put on longer later if he still is atracted.

As for permition basicly the same rules aply as when you travell as a tourist. So if youre need a visa to get into a country as a tourist the chance is for that he will need one. Check the rules with the embassys or countries gouvernment.

Tell him that if he goes to the wrong country without permision he would end up getting shoot or hanged. That would help him apply for the correct visas. Johan

Yes i would say he definately should be taking sailing lessons.

So, are you going to take those lessons with him? GPS navigation and celestial?

capt_terry
I been doing this 25 years and it is not a easy life.you have to be enduring and able to handle anything that comes up if that means going over the side to free a prop,I am doing power boats now as the sailing was getting to hard on me and single handling is not something for an older person to do,not that i have not it seen it done but it is a lot that can happen and alone is not good, and lets not forget the weather i have rode 18 major storms on board and if that's hell i have been there and alone is not the time,

Right...... Is this Candid Camera?

Freddy
Not sure, I think he should at least get some instruction...

But it doesn't matter if you're the best swimmer the world has ever known, if you're out in the ocean and you sink, you're not gonna swim all the way back.
