Would walkie talkies that have a 12-mile range work on a cruise ship?

I have friends who cruise, and they always use 12-mile range walkie-talkies, both on and off the ship.
If you haven't already purchased some, I'd recommened splurging a little bit, and opting for a set with a lot of channels and sub-channels. There will likely be a lot of people with the same idea, so you'll want frequency options so you're not always picking up someone else's conversation (I've had this problem at Disneyland before, and it's annoying!).
Also, bear in mind that cellphones with the walkie-talkie option (Boost Mobile, etc.) will not work. Actually, most cell services themselves don't work in other countries (I recently went to Japan and my cell wouldn't work. It was strange feeling so disconnected!).
Remember to bring extra batteries or an extra power strip. I'm sure a large amount of "playing" will occur, but you want your walkie-talkies to work when it's important too!

The hand-held walkie talkies work great while on board the ship. We use them to keep in touch with our teens.

You may have to change the channel you use because the units are several people using the walkie talkies while on board ship.

However, the phones with the walkie talkie features don't work when your out to sea.

Remember to take along an extra power strip to charge the units. There is usually only one power strip in the cabin.

Yes- If you are going on a big ship, you will need them. 12 mile range should be fine. Just try to get one with more than 16 channels because other people use them. Be sure to bring extra batteries. Good luck and Bon Voyage!

Yes they do - in fact most cruise lines have them on board that you can rent for your cruise. It's a great way to keep track of each other on the big ships.

Dusie
Also a consideration is how many channels they have. Dozens of people will also have them aboard and the better quality ones have more channels. That makes for less interference from others.

Yes they will work fine....mine are only 5 miles and they work perfectly.
Use a mid-range channel if it isn't too busy.
Don't forget...take them ashore too.

Tivogal
Yes, most probably
bring a power strip to charge them at night. Be aware also that there are many people using their own walkie talkies so you may have to switch channels to get better reception and less interference.
one cruise i went on they worked perfectly, the next one the channels were full of interference.
of course the more expensive models will have better reception for you. good luck. and most of all have fun.
