A few bad experiences:
Travelled with someone I liked but couldn't spend extended periods of time with. This was a HORRIBLE experience. I got up at the crack of dawn for sunrises just to have some alone time in peace from this person. I suggest that you only take someone you know you will enjoy being with all the time.
Room Service....They just couldn't get the order right. I wasn't too muffled about it but it was a bit disappointing. Could have been much worse!
I have heard of pirates chasing cruise ships (check out link below) but it's not a usual event. As well, Princess has been hit with several gastrointestinal outbreaks onboard - more than any other cruise line.
Unless you pay a lot of money, your room is incredibly small - mind you unless you're going on a 7/12/transatlantic cruise, this really doesn't matter b/c you're so busy you're only ever in your cabin to change, shower, or sleep.
I'd still cruise tho. I feel safe with Royal Caribbean and I've had good luck with them. Fear holds us back from so much - try a cruise and see how you like it :) |

We have been on 8 cruises and all of them have been wonderful. The worst one was on Carnival Tropicale to Alaska. Alaska is a great destination, so no complaints there but the ship was old and tacky. Try to pick a ship that is not too old and you should have a great time. If you think you might have a problem with sea sickness take some ginger pills with you. Our most basic cruise was on the Fantome, a windjammer barefoot cruise to Belize, Honduras and the Bay Islands of Roatan, Utila, . We were on it for 2 weeks in August. Pretty unique, we had a lot of fun but unfortunately 2 weeks after we disembarked the ship was lost at sea with 32 crew members during Hurricane Mitch. We did a Mediterranean Cruise, several Caribbean cruises, a Mexico Cruise. Our 2nd favorite cruise was the Transatlantic on Princess lines from Dover England, to Dublin, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and sailing into New York Harbor at dawn. We sang the star spangled banner as we approached the statue of liberty. Our first favorite cruise was the Wind Star to French Polynesia. Class to the max 120 passengers and 91 crew members. Talk about total relaxation. There is no place more romantic or relaxing. Bora Bora, Raitea, Huahini, Tahiti. We have sailed with Holland America twice and I prefer them over Carnival although I think maybe they have merged now anyway. Royal Caribbean and Princess are sure bets too. |

Holland America's Vendame (sp?). The crew just lied to our faces one after another, messed up our reservations many times (after talking with them 3 times on the phone and once in person), dirty blanket, etc. I would go on Princess...great line...went on the Grand. |

My wife and I took a 5 day cruise from Miami to Mexico and back. It was terrible. You have to remember you're being stuck with a thousand other people in a very small space. My wife and I are non smokers, non drinkers and really enjoy peace and quiet.
The problem with being on a criuse ship is that smokers are EVERYWHERE on deck and its hard to find a place smoke free. Nighttime is also trouble. Drunk people are everywhere, and they are smoking. If its not the smoking and drunks, then its children screaming endlessly. One afternoon while on the cruise, a 4 year old decided to pee his pants. It ran down his legs, over his flip flops and onto the deck...where it sloshed around with the movement of the boat.
There is also no place on a boat to go to be alone with your loved one. No matter where you go there is already someone or a group of people there, either drunk or partying.
My wife and I consider our cruise a waste of money and we will NEVER do it again. Save your money and go to a Caribbean island...St. Thomas or St. Croix or something. |

2000 cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line. had raw sewage seeping in under toilet. was awful. they had one room left and it was next to the engine room. couldn't hear yourself think, stayed in first and they finally fixed problem. Norwegian Cruise Line is an older ship.. |

My wife and I went on a Fall Foliage Cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line out of Boston in 2004. We'd been on a number of cruises so knew what to expect. Nothing that happened was NCLs fault, but there was no fall color that year in New England or eastern Canada during the later part of September. The ship, a smaller 1080 passenger liner, hit 15-foot seas coming around Newfoundland during the night. It was a trip. The dinning room was all bouncing floor and a challenge to negotiate. The staff did great, weaving but never dropping a tray of food. Many passengers became ill, confined to rooms. The next morning the Captain announced that there had been 55 mph winds and up to 17-foot seas during the night. I mean, those cabin beds pitched like the ship itself. It was over before dawn and we all, I think, sighed in relief. But that was the worst of it and the worst time I've had at sea.
We are planning a cruise on NCL for November this year or maybe May 2007. |
