We are sooo not mean to you guys! Like when you visit us no one would be rude or mean just because you are American. Just don't start feeding us the crap that you are such a free country and that you help other countries! - that won't fly with us! Don't act as though you are superior because you are American and you will be fine!
I have never ever been mean to Americans, I have however gotten into debates over politics, culture, social system and such, but always in a civil manner.
Plus everyone has always been nice to me in the States! They are even all eager to hear where I am from and what it is like - which I have always found really cool!
I have to say that some Americans tend to be rude when they come to Europe - talking load and acting as though everyone should be there and serve them. It is sad a lot of them don't understand customer service in the US and the one in Europe are completely different things! But a lot of Americans take it personally!
One thing that has always annoyed me though is that they tend to take over the city. Here I am late for an exam in the tram, can't wait to get there and then right on Museum Plain (Amsterdam), 20 Americans show up , wanna bord the tram and none of them has a ticket or change. So yeah you guess right - I end up half an hour late for my exam - I wish they would take into consideration that even the touristi cities in Europe do have people that live there and need to get around! Even then when I was really mad I never said anything nor was I mean in any way, but they sure deserved it - made the whole tram late for work!
But beside all of this - if you keep it clean and nice - no one will ever be mean to you in Europe! |

Mean? I dunno about that, but you can rest assured their opinion of the United States in general has gone way downhill over the last several years. |

Depends. I have a great time. A lot of Americans, though, go over there with the 'let's just see what IS wrong with these gomers, anyway." Pack an attitude, expect to use it. |

Why would we be mean to Americans? It makes no sense. Just like I wouldn't expect Americans to be nasty to me when I go there just because I'm European. Actually, I don't think they would notice, maybe because of the clothes. The only way people would be mean is if you're mean to them. And maybe they would look at your weirdly if you did one of these things that I've seen American do (and no, I wasn't mean, just couldn't stop myself from staring):
1-. Singing really loudly "Sweet Home Alabama" in a bar
(no, they were not from Alabama, but from California)
2-. Talking really loudly and disrespectfully, and mainly complaining about everything, thinking that because they are in a country were English is not the official language, no one can understand (wrong, most people understand, even if they don't speak it)
3-. Talk to other people in fast and loud English expecting them to understand you, instead of trying to make an effort and speak the country's language or,if you don't know it, using signs. You're in another country, people don't have to speak English.
Oh, and more than once I've seen Americans walking down the Ramblas in Barcelona wearing Mexican hats. No, Mexico and Spain are not the same country, Mariachi hat's are just Mexican.
But these are just examples that I've seen, I'm definitely not saying all Americans are like that. No way, but these are the sort of things that would irritate Europeans, or at least that have irritated me. But don't worry, we're generally welcoming and you'll have lot's of fun if you ever decide to visit! :-) |

I have run into far more ******* here at home in the US than I ever have in England, Scotland, the Netherlands, France, Italy, or Spain. In fact, some of the nicest people I've ever met in my life were the people I met in Europe. The fiction that Europeans are "mean" to Americans was created by insecure, arrogant Americans who think everyone else in the world is stupid. I wish those clowns would limit their vacations to Vegas and the Indy 500 and leave the interesting parts of the world to people who appreciate them. |

I have been to Switzerland and Italy, and for the most part, everyone I met was polite, and patient with the language barrier. Anywhere you go your gonna run in to rude people, but don't let them set a standard for the rest of us! |

I have been to Germany, Greece, and London and no one was rude to me because I'm from the United States. It's not something I announced to anyone, but no one was really rude to me because I'm from the states. Something you might notice if you go to Europe is that you don't speak English you speak American. I thought that was pretty funny. |

I don`t think that Europeans mean to people from States, but most of them hates George Bush politcs!
We had visit a couple from State, and met a lot of Europeans in town. I saw that people was just nice to them, and even welcome/invited them to their home. They loved/enjoyed to talk with the couple!
They allowed the couple to participate at the sport competition, and wan award!
I only can say... if you nice to people, they will be nice too! |
