Vasiliki-Βασιλική

About Guz Sancisi/Pains of Autumn?

Yesterday I saw a documentary in Greek tv about this Turkish film
http://www.megatv.com/erevna/default.asp?catid=13083&subid=2&tag=9312&pubid=1537776

It portrays a love between a Greek girl (I wonder why they choose this exact proffesion for her ?) and a Turkish guy.

The story focus not only in this love, but about the Sepptemvriana.
It was said, that before 3 years there was an exhibition in Istanbul/Constantinopole about the same incidents, but some left-winged re-acted violently, and it was stopped.

Now,3 years later, the movie was welcomed, and some other even said it was moderate enough !

I saw Turkish people, getting out of cinema crying...

What's your opinion about the movie?
I know that Turks condemn Septemvriana but do you accept to be a movie?
Do you believe that this is a good step for better relations (among public, not politicians of course)
I don't want this to offend someone, I was actually happy to see that people (both sides) start to see things from both points of view ..

p.s.Does any Greek know if it'll be released here?

Dear Vasiliki,
I saw the film with my wife, and we both shed tears at the tragic events that took place back in 1955. I guess every country has similar 'secret' sins. Believe me those people who organized this shameless tragedy did even worse things in Turkey in later years, where Turks killed Turks (Kahramanmaraş and Sivas incidents)!
The movie was just a movie; changed a few things that were in the book. All movies do that. I was uncomfortable with the profession of the Greek girl in the story, but the script was written by a 'non-Turk' Turkish citizen. I am not sure but he could be Armenian or Jewish.
So we cannot say that Turks attribute the role of a 'whore' to all Greek women!
I hope that all countries disclose those disgraceful actions of theirs to the present day public, so that such things will never happen again. Although I am not from Turkey (I am a Turkish Cypriot), I partly felt the shame.

I am Turkish and I saw the film. It was quite realistic. I think that those days, (we call them the 6-7 sept. events) were so embarassing for our history. The ignorant people, who were brainwashed, followed the provacators without questioning and the result was awful. I think we have to criticise ourselves. This film was an important step for us. The film was so impressing, I also felt some tears dropping during the film. In a nutshell, a good work, an important step.
And dear Haifa, you are such an idiot, a great idiot. There is a very very famous TV serie in Turkey about the love of a Turkish girl and a Greek guy.It is called "Yabncı Damat". Greek people are not our enemies. So try to use your brain sometimes. It may be helpful. and get yourself a life.

Totally Blunt
I agree with Gugu there. We have been talking about our social and political problems forever.

Sadly, people who dare to critisize Turkey disregard their own problems TODAY! In Germany, 9 consecutive arsons attempted and succeeded on Turkish immigrants were made. German court decided that the fires "appeared all by themselves", and therefore are not the result of hate crime. What about that?

It is strange how Turkey is getting a more open society than its counterparts.

6-7 september events(i guess sepptemvriana) was a crime. even prime minister was executed because of this event.

i dont think there is a Turkish point of view so i cant offend it was not nice.

about movie i havent seen yet but probabality i ll see and it seems good :)

I didn't have time to see it,but i will.

What happened back then was wrong and nobody can deny that. Most of us here, especially people in Istanbul, have friends.Like, i have both friends living in Greece and also Greek origin people whom were born and raised in Istanbul.I had no problem getting along with them.

But if we talk about politics,i'm sure there will be disputes.Because, just as an example, i will always see Turkish soldiers on Cyprus as the peace keepers and a Greek will always see them as invaders.

As long as we avoid politics,we always see there are very few differences and we see we are humans with feelings.

Is it possible not to avoid the past and still be friends,Well it's hard.Because when one party say "you did this and this" others will say "and you did that and that".We have to let the history judge the past and should look into future.

@Like a poster below already proved my point, and couldn't keep him/herself telling "how evil" the "majority" of Turks.

btw i'm so sorry what happened in my country during the cold war

I have not watched it (neither I am willing to do so), therefore, I cannot give an answer as regards the first part of your question; but, notwithstanding that I shall endeavor to give a sincere answer to the second part of it, of course, without trying to palliate past events. So, I hope you do not take any offense either as I do not....

Firstly, I am neither so sentimental that I could cry over a movie, nor that optimistic to assume that it could be regarded as an initiative to promote good relations. Thus, I would not nourish some unrealistic hopes with respect to that problem... Well, at least that's how I feel about it as a Turk since Turks do not hold any ill feelings towards Greeks. Probably there is too much to write down though. (And, that's why you cannot see any questions like "does Turks hate Greeks? as we, Greeks, have reasons to hate Turks, so I wonder if Turks hate Greeks." asked by Turks. So, maybe you should have asked this question to other Greeks.... Are they ready to move on?.. It does not seem to me so... not the majority... at least...)

PS How one could criticize Turkey about a Kurdish issue while Greece do not even accept the fact that there are Greeks of Turkish descent, and continues the official denial of the Turkish identity of that particular community. Greece cannot even stand the name "Turk", so there is still a ban on the usage of it in the titles of the associations, clubs and civic organizations. As have been said, there is too much to say, but I do not want to go any further because I do not intend to sabotage your good intentions by asking this question.

Vasiliki, Will you accept our Apologize ?

xanthochroi
it was intended to frighten the primarily greek community and then could not be controlled i didnt watch the movie yet but please people accept the fact that both countries put some pressure on these minorities so minorities suffer from discrimination and politics all the time i hope things will get better

amada
The film is an adaptation of a novel on the same subject, and I read somewhere that in the book, the girl was jewish, but because the events mostly are about what happened to the Greek population , they changed her into a Greek character as well. By the way, many business were destructed that day, and while most were of the Greek citizens, some others were of the Armenian and Jewish ctizens' businesses.

Every country has it's share of tragic or controversial events in her history so it is normal to have movies or novels depicting, criticizing or condemning these tragic events unless the country in question is an anti-democratic dictatorship. The republic of Turkey is a democratic country so there is no reason to get surprised when hearing about a movie criticizing the infamous September events.

Dear Vasiliki, do you get the message? : ) No offence, but I kind of felt an innocent prejudice here in your question regarding your well-mannered surprise.... You don't assume that we are all ultra-nationalistic, brainwashed jimbos who applause and praise everything about our history or politics, do you? We don't have a shortage of self-criticism.

Turkish literature and movie industry is full of protest and harsh criticisms. The movie "Güz Sancısı" is just a recent example of this. By the way, the movie is based on the best-selling novel of Yılmaz Karakoyunlu. So even before the movie, there was this novel (published in 1990, won a prize from Turkish Writers' Associtation in 1992) and it was one of the best-selling novels. Which means both the movie and the novel were wellcomed by the public.

If you're interested in this subject, other than "Güz Sancısı", you can also find documentaries, short stories, poems and lots of articles/essays in Turkey regarding 6-7 September 1955. The most famous documentary is Can Dündar's "O gün, Türkiye'nin Utanç Gecesi, 6-7 Eylül Olayları". You can find this in Youtube but it's in Turkish of course. Dilek Güven's "Cumhuriyet Dönemi Azınlık Politikaları Bağlamında 6/7 Eylül Olayları" is another important book (non-fiction), Soner Yalçın, a famous Turkish journalist, published lots of essays about this subject on various newspapers. There are many many more, these are the ones I remember.

Typical Muslims!

if u noticed one thing, its a "Greek girl and a Turkish guy"!!
have u ever asked ur self why not a "Greek guy and a Turkish girl"??

Because in Islam men can marry non-muslims while muslim women cant! This is the basic forms of sexism and female oppression.

SO since its "Halal" or islamicaly permissible for males to marry non muslim women, they make those silly movies as if they are not racist and they fall in love with other nationalities!
but sadly the different nationality/religion love is valid for males only!
