Istanbul is exotic, fun, chaotic, busy, but full of unsafe areas for a woman travelling on her own. I went there with my hubby years ago, and most of the Turkish men just followed us everywhere, to the point that my usually laid-back hubby nearly lost his rag with one of them!
Go in group and beware the touts who try to sell you anything and everything! But there are also many friendly folks who will invite you in for some apple tea and turkish delight. Have fun! |

i loved it when i went - will def go again. so much fab architecture - Sinan's work - the suleymania, blue mosque, as well as the topkapi palace, hagia sophia etc etc. sailing down the bosphorous and seeing all the fab palaces.
as long as you dress respectably you should be fine. the covered market is well worth a visit.
personally i loved it, i found the people respectful and friendly and the whole place just really chilled and laid back.

istanbul is a unique metropol that is placed on two different continentals!
it's culture is also fascinating! The perfect mix of ancient Byzantine and Ottoman Culture....really like no other.
There are lot of historical places like Dolmabahce Palace,Topkapi Palace,Blue Mosque,Yerebatan Basilica....
and big shopping malls to shop and have fun like Cevahir (the Europe's no:1 biggest one),Metrocity,Kanyon,Akmerkez...
Traffic is not a big deal when you use subways and tramways.
when it comes to crime level;yeah it is no:1 in Turkey but around the big metropols in world including London,New York,LA,Paris...Istanbul is the last :) no worries..
Last a few advices to do in Istanbul:
-walk down on istiklal street on Taksim
-take a boat tour on bosphorus
-shop as much as you can :)...really chap!
-buy lots of souvenirs!! you will miss Turkey |

Istanbul is one of the most interesting city in the world. It has a lot of really interesting things.Let me tell you what i saw in Istanbul.
*I know traffic is a mess in istanbul but only at specific time.by the way six or seven years ago, traffic in Istanbul is terrible,i mean really really terrible.you had to wait hours.but now there is no serious traffic problems in Istanbul.
*History. That's make Istanbul so different from other cities. It has Roman,Byzantine, greek and ottoman works.Like Hagia Sophia,Sultanahmet Camii,The obelisk,Topkapı Palaca,Blue Mosk, The BasilicaCistern... and more.
Istanbul is a combination of East and West. You can still hear loveable, old and historical music while you are walking on the streets of Sultanahmet.
I must admit, there are a lot of disturbing people in Istanbul because there are a lot of people in istanbul who came from different parts of Turkey. Some of them especially if you are in a turistic place, they will call you "my friend" and try to sell you unnecessary things, don't stop until you go far away from him :D and also some people just sit and watch other people nevermind if she is a local person or tourist.
Of course only a small amount of people in Istanbul are like them. What's more there are a lot of places there to have a drink or fun.You can go to Nevizade,ı must insist, you should go there.
ok,i think i wrote too much :D i will finish. Is Istanbul city to live?
hmm hard one.Istanbul is so unique that it can make you feel stressed and angry or it can make you think that you are in a heaven. It depends on your character. |

I've been twice. It's a fascinating introduction to the Muslim world. There is a lot to see including the Topkopi Palace, Sultan's Palace (best ive seen anywhere), Blue Mosque and much more. Its a blend of west and east and as a moderate Muslim culture you should do well. |

Istanbul is chaotic, but it has beautiful mosques and ancient Roman and Early Christian buildings and ruins that are really worth a visit. I went with another woman, and really was not bothered so much by the men, compared to Greece (much worse), North Africa or even Southern Italy.
I really enjoyed the food and pastries, too.
If you are used to living in a small town in the Midwest, watch out! If you live in NYC or Miami, no problem... |

I love it!!! I went there for New Year's Eve and it was amazing.. Yup the traffic is a mess, but there is so much to be seen there. I loved the churches and the mosques, Bazaars and that both trip on sunset at Bosphorus was awesome. The view was amazing!!
but best of all I liked the people. They are amazing, nice and so hospitable
warm regards to all turkish ppl!! |

Great place to visit, lots to see and do. Dont forget the shopping can be very cheap even near Taksim Square.
Fly to Ataturk very close to city centre the second airport is a long way out.
Have a great time (don't drink wine with meals 60ytl a bottle common for a cheap bottle). |

I've only been there on a business trip for 3 days a few years ago, so got stuck in the office quite a bit.
I did walk between hotel & office (a good 15 mins walk), so did see a little bit of that particular area and thought it was lovely. I also had my Turkish colleague taking me around quite a bit, and I really liked it there. Nice food etc. (my colleague obviously knew where to go, which helps, of course).
Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the Asian part of the city on the other side of the Bosphorus, but apparently, it's quite different from the European side. I'd definitely go there again to visit it properly... |
