I agree with Mertev. Çanakkale wars almost 100 years ago, showed this countries people would prefer to die instead of giving up their freedom. How powerfull the opponents are only faith and courage win every challenge.People fought and died they are totally heroes, every single one of them. And this whole nation is proud of what they left to us by paying with their blood. |

Turkey is the first country emancipated from imperialist countries. That made Turkey a good example to all occupied countries. |

Dardanelles Campaign Defensive of Canakkale Made Mustafa Kemal very famous through the nation.Thats why the whole nation trusted him and followed him during the war of independence. That war changed the whole world history. He couldn't be ATATURK if we would have lost the war over there and the whole history would have been different.Although it wasn't happened in the Republic period , it was the first spark of the Turkish Nation. |

The republic AND the revolutions. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate Ottoman history, but, well, empires have to end at one time. The time of the classical empires (Roman, East Roman) was past, Ottomans didn't revert to colonialism (as in sucking the life out of colonies) and couldn't adapt to the new industries and techologies. Tough luck. I feel lucky my ancestors were living in the heart of the empire, Anatolia, rather than the perimeter. So I could be a citizen of the modern, laicist state, not of war-torn Western toys. Edit: Jim's behaviour is best expressed as "exhibiting himself". Can anyone reading his posts have a doubt? |

Just being considered to eventually join the EU is a great achievement for Turkey. |

I don't know which one Turks regard as an achievement. It amazes me, however, that they still regard secularism as one. Why one should be proud of something that others have accomplished centuries before them is rather bizarre. What other historical achievements are there really...? Electricity? Smarten up.. Robert, you got me wrong. I admire several Turkish people and historical facts. But secularism is a "must" not an "achievement" for the developed societies. Allow me to regard Turkey as such. True colors? oh come on now...am I a PKK agent as well? :) |
