Crete, the food in the tavernas was A1, the people friendly, the hotel excellent. I've also been to Sithonia (the middle 'finger' in Halkidiki, that was superb too.)

To avoid bad experiences like those two above, book into a very good hotel, you pay extra but it's worth it.

Greece has ~ 17.000.000 tourists every summer and it is among the 10 most touristic destinations world wide.
Some opinions expressed here are not representative of Greece and reflect mostly the "el cheepo" back packers that cannot afford a descent hotel. Don't listen to them. I have found similar places in Spain and elsewhere of course and there too back packers will always complain. But 17.000.000 people every summer would think otherwise...

Overall Greece is a lovely country that it is worth to be visited.
Try to avoid the obvious:

catchy cheep rooms for rent
touristic restaurants
anywhere where teenagers gather
and so on and so forth...!

my favourite is kefalonia but my brother in law has been all over Greece and skiathos is his favourite too .
kefalonia because is has fantastic beaches and lovely scenery and is still relatively unspoilt .mind you stalis is Crete was nice for different reasons not too busy not too quiet and great bars restaurant's etc .if you want a chill out holiday with fantastic beaches try ouranopolus halkadiki but it may be a bit quiet for some .

i lived in hersonissos in crete for a year and loved it. that was about 14 years ago and i have never been back. but will one day. i met my husband there when he was on a two week holiday. been married for 12 years and have 4 gorgeous daughters!

a few years back my boyfriend and i went to Kavos in Corfu it wasn't very nice.... gimme Cyprus any day!! maybe I'm being slightly biased though!!!

My favorite island in Greece, well, I have 2 but my absolute favorite is Patmos - I loved everything about the island, it was simply a beautiful seaside villa, breathtaking views and quiet, peaceful atmosphere. My second favorite island is Rhodes - I loved the medieval look of the city and I ADORED the "Renaissance festival" shopping district there - it was so much fun buying gifts for my family.

Went to Zante - was probably both the best and worst holiday of my life lol. The apartment was disgusting but it was so bad that we all just had to laugh about it - we even made one of those home video things that we planned to send into holidays from hell! Plus the temperature was almost unbearable - I sweated from places I did not even know you could sweat from and my hair was a constant mess.
Still, it was a brilliant laugh and I will always remember it :)

Kefalonia, it's a beautiful island and where Captain Correlli's Mandolin was set and filmed. It's small enough so you could actually see the whole thing while you're there and has lots of quiet resorts (we stayed in Scala) or if you stay in Argostoli (think it's the capital) there's loads of nightlife, restaurants and shops. Also the people are very friendly and it's not too touristy.

have been twice to crete once to kos and once to zante. loved them all. i think what makes the greek islands so good is the people. they are fantastic cannot do enough for u .also the food. i luv it . the weather helps as well.xx

I have been to corfu and if you like having everyone speaking english and the majority of them are english wearing england t-shirts then thats the best place to go, they have pizza hut, kfc, and mac donalds....(sunny england) but if you want to experience a bit of the culture then crete is good...im going to kos nezt week which ive never been too but it seems very beautiful and pictureseque!!

They are all great. Corfu is my favorite. I was living in Brindsi Italy at the time I was visiting Corfu. The cost of transport was very inexpensive from there. The beaches are numerous and very beautiful. The people were extremely friendly and courteous. The food was superb. The shopping afforded some very unique gifts at a very reasonable price. I am hopeful you will have the same wonderful experience regardless of your choice of islands.

I went Corfu and thought it was horrible. I prefer Spain and Spanish islands, it is a lot cleaner than Greece.
