Yes, Amsterdam is FANATASTIC. Even without the "coffeeshops", what a great place to visit. Try to venture a little beyond the train station area where alot of the shops have a minimum (usually alot more than you would be able to smoke in one setting!), and you will find the smoke a little more affordable and the people a little cooler.
I remember De rokerij (Leidsesstraat 41) to be the coolset one we visited. The booth is in the back, very comfortable seats and great vibe. At the bar they will supply you with a freshly cleaned bong, with new water! They have a few shops now, but the aforementioned one was the one we enjoyed the most! If you google the name, their web site comes up.
Top ten things to do in Amstersdam; (in no particular order)
1. Eat French Fries
2. Visit the Van Gogh Museum
3. Ride the trolley (make sure you pay, fines are very hefty)
4. See Cirque Du Soleil
5. Hang out in Damn Square
6. Walk through the Red light District (partake if you'd like, I did not)
7. Smoke! Smoke! Smoke!
8. Hash & marijauna museum. (small & cheesy, but some pretty big growths!)
9. Heineken Brewery Tour (lots of free beer)
10. Check out the flower market
11. I could go on....
Check out this website before you go;

Great info on anywhere in the world.
Have a great time! Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have, as I am a big advocate Amsterdam! |

The cafes and prices for pot and hash are reasonable. Don't partake on the street though, and don't behave loudly or foolishly in public. Cafe's are like bakeries, you can buy baked goods and coffees, but not alcohol. Be sure to ask about 'smart shops' too! |

pot should be around € 5,- per gram (a bit more for stronger) only.... the pot in Amsterdam is "tourist" quality go to most other cities and the pot is MUCH better. You can buy pre rolled joints for between € 2,- to € 3,- (with tobacco) If you are not used to smoking pot just buy 1 pre rolled or € 5,- and you can last a couple of hours on it (don't overdo it, you can get really sick if you smoke to much, headache + vomiting)if you can't leave Amsterdam to go to an other City try "de rokerij" that's a pretty decent shop.
Have fun! |

Amsterdam is absolutely fantastic.
There are about 100 or more "coffeeshops" that legally sell pot. They are all well organized and great places to hang out with friendly and interesting people from all over the world.
Up until last week, there were a few that also sold beer, but a new law put an end to that. Some of those few places have opened second shops next door, where you can still smoke and drink beer, but you can't purchase pot.
Smoking pot in public or in non-green friendly places is frowned upon. Technically, it's illegal, but you'll get off with a warning or a nasty snipe. Just be discreet.
Each coffeeshop has a menu in multiple languages with multiple types of pot and hash. 10 euros will get you about five grams, on average. Papers are generally provided at the counter individually for free. You can also buy pre-rolled, but prepare for the tobacco that they usually put in them. |

to be honest, when you add the cost of air travel, I could see the logic of trying to find it locally and paying the propped up price the illegal opportunistic market gets! It might not be as safe, but probably much cheaper in the long run and it is already through customs! |
