Put a link (1) below where you can see what kind of (guided) tours you can do in Amsterdam.
I'd suggest you go on a canal boat too, I'd take the one discribed with link (2), its €7,50 for and adult. Boat tour is about an hour and with them you really see the good sights. Make sure you get on at the Rokin (street), so not near the Central Station.
You can pick up a city map in a hotel.
Otherwise try link (3) , and find amsterdam/ the netherlands, you can zoom in etc.
Van Gogh museum, Rijksmuseum (though being restored, so not everything on displey), Dam Square, Rembrandt Square (nice pubs), Anna Frank House (be prepared for a long queue), area around Kalverstraat (shopping street with some nice side streets, like Spui *cosy pubs* and "het Begijnenhof"*old square where nuns/old spinsters used/still live with an English church there*), Oudezijdse Achterburgwal (red light district) and if you like the nightlife go to the Leidseplein for loads of pubs, including an Irish one.
If you use a city map and mark how you want to walk around, would be a good idea too, if you arent scared of walking its really the best way to see the city.
Have fun! |

I spent a week there in 1977..... It was wonderful
Gotta see:
Anne Frank House
Van Gogh Museum
Rijksmuseum Museum
I HIGHLY recommend, going to open air cafes and just sit there and watch the people hustle by. Have a plate of cheese and bread with sweet-butter. I can still taste them today!
Here is a site with lost of info on the sights in Amsterdam:
http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/
You will LOVE it there!

youll notice all the foreigners screaming redlight district and coffeshops, a realy dutchy like me will disagree. The red light district is interesting to see, but trust me, after having seen it, youll have seen it, and youll be looking for something new 5 minutes later.
there are many interesting things to do in amsterdam. i would suggest visiting the Rijksmuseum, it has many paintings by famous dutch painters like rembrant and van gogh.
if you like shopping i would suggest the P.C Hoofdstraat, its a very expensive shoppingstreet, but very worth your while.
as a tourist it probably wouldnt hurt to get a boat ride through the canals, but its very expensive (tourist trap)
if you like cafes and bars i would suggest leidscheplein and rembrantplein, two squares that get real fun at night.
you could go visit the older buildings in amsterdam, like the beurs van berlage, the royal palace, the old merchant houses.
be sure to get a map. amsterdam is very confusing to people who dont live there, even i get lost sometimes. (the streets go round in circles, but they dont look like they do. making it very disororienting.
to get around i would reccommend doing either of the following: rent a bike, or use public transporation. renting a car is NOT reccommended, not only will you pay tons of cash parking it. many many many streets are one way sometimes forcing you to go where you dont want to. and traffic is murder, suppliers will stop in the middle of the street to unload goods, as there is no other place to do so.
edit: oh i see i forgot about anne franks house. a must see seriously. |

Amsterdam is a very flat city (no hills) if you
just get up in the morning and walk
until evening you should see it all |

Go to the Van Gogh museum, for sure. It's the first time I ever saw art like that, and I've never looked at his art the same since. It's incredible!
Don't spend too much time in the coffee shops. 2 days is too short.
If I were you, I'd just walk around lots. Bring a map, cause you'll definitely get lost! |

Ask the cab driver to take you to dam square and just start there. red light baby!
don't get ripped off on rooms right there in the train station. Get your room ahead of time....damn vultures.
Also, when it's late, those turkish people freak me out when I'm high. I swear they had fangs. One of them carried a torch with a flame on it to a protest. I've seen Turks all over the place, but these mo fos looked like they meant business.
try to go to some coffee shops (yeah right) farther away from the train station. That will be more real. The line at the ann frank museum will be long, so forget that. You won't see any of the good paintings at the van gogh museum. Bring a coat and go see the sex shows. Don't bring a banana for lunch. That was my amsterdam from 8am to 8pm. I had someone from Amsterdam with me. Then I left with about an oz of weed on me. There should be a donation spot before you get on the train.
Oh, and when in Rome, add some tobacco to that weed. |
