Amsterdam + one other city: which one? (Not London, Paris, Berlin, or Prague)? |
My husband and I are going to Amsterdam for a few days in May. We usually like to see at least 2 different locations on a 10-day trip, and he likes to see unusual/unique places that are " really different" from what we've seen before. What do you recommend in Europe, and why? We've already been to London, Paris, Berlin, and Prague. I don't mind flying to the second city, but I prefer flights that are non-stop. A train or boat trip would be fine, too. Thanks for any recommendations! |

I was going to suggest Munich. You can go see several castles in Germany from there, plus The Eagle's Nest has incredible views (where Hitler stayed), and Salzburg Austria is only about a 2 hour drive south. Other things to do are go see the Olympic Park, the BMW museum, and Dachau. |

I spent a semester in Budapest... it's fantastic. It is very "Eastern Europe" in the way it feels. The nightlife is great, and it's incredible to be in such a cultural meeting point. While I loved Budapest, and I will always stay loyal to it, the other places that I visited (and enjoyed) were:
Split, Croatia: it's a tropical paradise in May. That's when I went. It's inexpensive and exquisitely quaint. Everyone seems to think Croatia is a scary country, but not in the least. It's a sandy and rocky beach utopia.
Krakow, Poland: This will remind you a lot of Prague... rather like little America hidden in Europe (ie, lots of tourists and souvenirs) . However, I visited Auschwitz and Birkenau (the concentration camps) while I was there, and I have to say, I have never had such a life changing experience.
Istanbul, Turkey: You'll never see anything like this city. It's like something out of a C.S. Lewis book, or Arabian Nights. I literally had someone offer to sell me a carpet for my dowry. The Haggia Sofia and the Blue Mosque sit side by side each other, with the Topkapi Palace just adjacent... 3 of the modern/ancient wonders of the world just sitting right there... it's unbelievable. There are fantastic boat tours that take you on mini trips to the Asian side of the city, or to one of the islands. People wear turbans and try to sell you nuts and fresh-squeezed orange juice on the street. Amazing.
I hope this is a bit of a guideline, and great luck planning your trip! |

I would sugest the city of Vilnius, cap. of Lithuania.
It is not a wellknown destination : it is a mixture of all European architectural styles, it is called a baroque city, here you will find some buildings of gothic, renaissance and other styles, it is enscribed in UNESCO world herritage list.

If you want to stay in the same area but see a different town, consider Rotterdam. It is only an hour by train from Amsterdam, but rather different, more different than most other towns in the west of Europe.
You can also combine Amsterdam with one or several of the villages in the Netherlands.
As all of the Netherlands is less than 3 hours travel from Amsterdam, and much within one hour, you will not have to travel far. |
