Avoid the hotels too close to the Central Station and the Dam, these are often tourist rip-offs. Look for hotels that are situated just within or near the rim of canals. There you are most likely to find one that gives you a good price-quality-location balance.

Remember that Amsterdam is actually quite small and that you can easily walk all the distances in the city centre.

Would also recommend a good hotel review site!!

NH Amsterdam Centre

Stadhouderskade, 7 1054ES Amsterdam, Amsterdam

In the city's cultural centre, overlooking the Leidseplein, the hotel enjoys an exceptional location, surrounded by theatres, museums, nightclubs, luxury shops and many cafes and restaurants. It is found only 10 minutes from the Convention centre (RAI) and only 15 kilometres from the Airport of Amsterdam-Schiphol.

Good luck!

There is a Campanile Hotel just outside Amsterdam with the rail link across the road. Budget Hotel but worth it.

Hansje brinker is favourite by Backpackers. It is not far from the most touristic places. No airco, no nice view, but clean rooms. Not for 30+ I would say.
Check the postal code of your hotel to see if your in the center. 1012, 1013 are right in the center. Warmoesstraat would not be advisable. 1070, 71, 72,73 is near the center as is 1053-55.

Have you considered an apartment? I rented a 2 bed (1 double, 2 singles) in the Jordaan (excellent area - close but not too close and near canals etc ) for 4 - cheaper than any hotel and fantastic to have the freedom/space -The one we stayed at had two balconies, excellent open plan kitchen/dining/living room etc - try Lindenstraat 59 - search for it on
www.homelidays.com (there is two - we had the upper floor)

look up in the directory 'The Old Quarter' lovely 2/3 star hotel, close to Central Station & the Red Light Area. another place that i have stayed at a couple of times is the 'Hotel De Munch', up near Fredrikplein. lovely family run hotel and great hospitality, located good for traveling around amsterdam. both of the above hotels are in the Amsterdam telephone directory, and both can be booked over the phone. have a good time, a wonderful vibrant city.

I think it is safe to say that it depends on:

1-When you want to go.
2-Your Travel budget.
3-Any particular location in Amsterdam?

It does make a difference in pricing(I am Owner of a Travel Agency). But Amsterdam in general is affordable. If you could either kindly call, email me at: indysteve1563@yahoo.com, or reach me through Yahoo Messenger, we can see what's doable for you within your timeframe and budget.
