I have been a few times and always end up in the well known tourist places, does anyone know any good cafe's/bars or restaurants that are not so well known?

Hello, I live in Holland. It depends on what you like accually. Amsterdam is a big city, it is wise to figure out what you would like to do or what you would you like to see. One thing is for sure, drugs we have enough here. Till a certain amount it is legal but don't go overboard!!

a good place to go if you have the time is Gouda you can get there very easy by train from Amsterdam will take about an hour there are a few nice places to see there or try this in Amsterdam http://www.verzetsmuseum.org/english/indexE.html you may find it interesting |

I can't give you the name of specific resteraunts but when I went there 5 years ago, we went to a little fishing village called Urk. It is a very beautiful and quaint, old world style Holland. It is not a well known touristy spot, which makes it very special. Have fun! |

The canal cruises are good, if a bit long, but would be nice with your partner, also Heineken factory was enjoyable, you'll even get a free drink. I also got a bus to see the hague, the place is so small you'll be there and back in a day.
The sex museum is something else! The red light is only a small part of the city, but the rest of the place is good fun, with some really good pubs all over the city. |

Just go on a good wander around other than right in the centre or in the red light district. I went with 3 friends last March and had such a good time stopping off at a few coffee shops. One tip - try the apple cake. Breakfast, lunch or dinner it is so tasty. Also the sex museum is fun and silly and and only costs about 2E 50C. Have fun. x |

Amsterdam is filled with lots of good, small and unknown bars and restaurants; just walk around untill you find one you find apealling and you'll be all right. |
