There are super cheap flights from London/Stanstead to Montpellier and Marseille. There you could rent a car or take trains. Montpellier is a nice surprise, by the way, and the beaches nearby aren't as overdeveloped as the Cote d'Azur. On Jun13 to Montpellier Ryanair flies for 40 quid. On June 15 they fly to Marseille for 50. You could take the train from Calais to the south of France, probably changing in Lille or Paris, but it won't be anywhere near that cheap, and it would take from 6 to 8 hours.

Fly direct to Nice.... |

Yes, you can get the ferry or the chunnel to Calais, then the train to Paris, and then another train to the South of France. It's a long trip though, why don't you just fly to Nice? You'd need a passport for taking the train anyway .... |

A place to go is Monaco, even if it is just for a day. Great sights, see the boats and the cars, and you may even see a celeb or two! |

Can seriously recomend Nice. Its so beautiful, with many other great places nearby such as Cannes, St.Tropez and Monte Carlo.
The best way to get there is to fly direct. Quick and cheap!
All the best. |

hi ! i'm french. flight to montpellier or beziers + train to cap d'agde or narbonne. if you go to the cote d'azur (nice, cannes or st tropez) you'll see that life is too expensive.
In narbonne or cap d'agde, there are many entertainments and things to see around. |

Assume you mean somewhere and your not looking for the meal ticket!!
Nice and the surrounding areas are good some have stoney beaches though (I prefer Cannes to Nice). Almost all the coastline has developed beach areas so take your pick. Accommodation is expensive during the summer months and the public beaches can be crowded.
Ferry and other transport south is not usually the cheapest unless you take a bus all the way. Check out all the low cost airlines compare with the larger ones that do have cheaper fares at times (all easy to do on line start with Easyjet and British Airways websites) and book ahead.

Marseilles is a much cheaper option than Nice and the coast line each way is great. Look at flights to Toulouse and then a train to the coast which will take you to the area around Narbonne
If you are frightened of flying; need another routing. You could take a car then you need to plan for an overnight stop and a lot of petrol. If you are interested in taking your time in getting there you could avoid all the toll roads otherwise plan for the tolls and it will not be cheap.
The train system in France is well developed and really easy to use so you can move up and down the coast quite easily. And that is the other choice. Train from London to one of the connecting cities and then another train south.
