First beware of the bicycle in the city, they are like mosquitos, when you hear a bike bell get out of the way fast.
Most everything in the city is easy to get to using the trams. I suggest buying a multi day pass, because the strip tickets are confusing at first. There are many clubs of all types in the city, and bars as well all within walking distance of a tram stop, though after like 1am trams stop running and then you take the bus or a cab.
There are many good bars on and around dam square.
Also many good bars on and around Rembrandtplein.
Other things include tuschinski movie theater on Reguilersbreestraat, very nice.
Its always worth a walk through the red light district, even if not shopping, just to see whats out there.
As far as eating out, there are many good steak houses in the city, there is one in particular that is rather good that is right across from the theatre listed above.
Also basically walking the city down the canals at night is pretty nice, you can detour off and see the red light district, or stop at various bars to get a drink, and see the old buildings, some dating as far back or further than the 1300's. You can take a night canal cruise, the city has more canals than venice. |

Yes, Amsterdam's awesome. There are tons of cafes and pubs everywhere, I would recommend just walking around at night for a great experience. |

you can look on http://www.amsterdam.nl/ too for pubs and clubs. For pubs i would advise to go the areas the Pijp and the Jordaan or around the corner from Leidseplein (Marnixstraat) or Utrechtsestraat as this is were the local people go to in case you dont only want to meet other tourists. Don't believe the negative comments below. It is a great city which you will notice especially if you go outside the tourist area. (the red light district is only a small part of amsterdam) |

Depending what you like, but a canal cruise, food and booze included is nice and not too expensive. While your down the canal ways you could book the floating Palace Chinese restaurant. It is enormous and the choice of platters are fantastic. Also reasonably priced. Up town there are all sorts of bars etc. A lot put on "adult entertainment', but it can range from quite tame to er ................... |

There's a little club on Warmeostraat called "Starlight Express", and it's free to get in, watch your pockets,. I've been about 6 times (wouldn't go again, it gets boring!), and I have been pickpocketed twice, although I was a bit "worse for wear"!! But you can see the thieves on mobile phones to each other, checking you out, you also see loads of people in doorways, injecting.... nice!! I would stay out of the Red light district, it's shite, and go to Leidesplein area, so much better, brilliant nightclubs, Have fun x |

Yes, i have been to Amsterdam many times.
In fact, i am there 5 days a week, sometimes more, because i work there.
As to where to go.
You`ll have to see what you prefer, but in the city center there are a lot of places where things are 'happening' .
Leidseplein, Rembrantsplein.. these are just two names.
There is a lot to discover - so i`d say - go ye, and have fun.
One tip - do not carry too much cash/valuables on you, and check beforehand where you want to go, so you won`t appear clueless. Some groups prey on tourists, like in any big city.
I don`t know where phantomswife309 went to, or when - but she`s way off.
If you don`t believe me - feel free to contact me (profile) and i`ll be glad to give you a tour. |

Its the most disgusting place in the world. You go to the parks and there is human excreta everywhere, You cannot walk amywhere because of it. then in the streets there are shops that sell sex objects. there are picpockets everywhere...on the trams in the streets...everywhere. I would go there if you paid me. |
|

I would reccommend sitting in a coffee shop (Hill St Blues next to the red light district) --- get stoned and see where your feet take you!
It's one of those places where nearly every street looks the same and you'll end up miles from where you're heading anyway ... it happens to me every time I go there!
No point planning to go anywhere ... just see what happens when you get there! ( I wouldn't bother with the sex museum ... just buy an old porno mag - it's crap!) |
