you could make a boat trip on the canals, the red light district is famous, and you can visit it as well if you are a woman. amsterdam is lovely just for walking around because almost the whole centre seems an open-air museum. There are also lot's of museums, like the van Gogh museum, the Rijksmuseum and there is even a funny sex-museum and a cannabis museum. ofcourse there are lot's of coffeeshops where you can smoke. Another thing you should watch is the anne-frank house.

listen to the junkies, they know all the good spots =)

Who wants to visit the Van Gogh when you can visit the Dam blow

Avoid the junkies at all costs; this is fairly easy to do.

When on the main drag (Damrak, NZ/OZ AChter/Voorburgwal, Warmoestraat etc - most of Centrum), keep looking into the middle distance, and avoid eye contact with anyone you don't know. After a while, you will get to know the kinds of people I mean, and this will come naturally to you.

If a stranger on the street asks you if you speak English, make out you do not; they are almost certainly a beggar.

Never get your map out in public; you will be mugger/junkie/beggar fodder.

Never attempt to buy any drugs from the street; most of those people are not dealers, they are muggers.

As for where to go: both Van Gogh and Rembrant museums are having a refurb, so not there.

Anne Frank's house, the Stedelijk, a canal cruise at night, Vondelpark, Wertheim Park (eyes peeled for the resident junkie), the zoo, the botanical gardens, the beach....

Oh, and don't buy weed in Centrum, either; poverpriced and below par. Better to get out of the tourist trap, and better still, jump on a train and go to Haarlem.

Don't forget to pack your woollies.

I love the place, have been a couple of times.

I suggest an early start for major attractions like Anne Frank house which we waited half a day to get into... So be prepared for a long wait on some attractions.

There is lots to do in Amsterdam and Holland. I have been going there for quite a long time. Shopping is a must you will definately get some very unique gifts. The Keukonhoff gardens are a must. My kids loved them- not too expensive either. A boat trip in Amsterdam is a must too as you will see the city differently. All trips have guides in English, German, Dutch -so well geared up for tourism. Certain parts of the city can be a little daunting especially if you are travelling with children or are not a regular traveller. If my brain serves me correctly, avoid the train station areas and the red light district. Get a map of the city. If you get a chance to hire a car visit Wassaneer there is a theme park called Duinrell. Gouda is beautiful and worth a visit.

There is a lot more to Amsterdam than sex and drugs. However, for a taste of that side of Amsterdam I recommend a visit to the Red Light District. If you plan on doing this you may want to bring a friend and be careful of pick pockets. Also, don’t take pictures of any of the girl or someone will come out and bash your camera. (Literally)

I recently visited Amsterdam in April 2007 and it immediately became my favorite city in the world (and I have done a fair amount of traveling).

Here is a list of the places/museums/sites I enjoyed most during my stay.

Albert Cuyp Market- It takes up the entire street (Albert Cuypstraat) and is located in the pipe. It is open from 9:30am to 5:00pm Monday through Saturday and sells a wide variety of items at low prices.

Keukenhof Gardens- Located outside Amsterdam but you can buy a bus ticket that will take you to and from. It has an assortment of flower gardens and many other activities to do. From Keukenhof you can see the tulip fields. (I suggest traveling there in late April or May or else the flowers might not be in bloom)

Vincent Van Gogh museum- The Dutch pronounce it “van hock” and if you ask to find the “van go” museum they will either laugh at you or look confused. Van Gogh is not only one of the most brilliant artists of his time but is Dutch too, so his museum is worth checking out. However, I live in NY and I feel like the Met. has stolen most of his famous pieces.

Ann Frank’s House- an audio tour of her house is the best way to go in my opinion. Although it is crowded and there is a long line to get in, it is worth the wait and the experience.

Heineken Experience- Its sort of a tripy museum with funky music, odd yet creative games, virtual rides, vintage beer advertisement, and free beer. The entrance fee is only something like 10 euro, which isn’t bad at all.

Canal Cruise- Amsterdam is of course famous for having beautiful canals. The canal cruise I took was more of the cheesy romantic type for honeymooners but I went with my mother and sister and still had a really great time. It was a wine and cheese, night cruise and was a fantastic chance to see around the city.

Rijksmuseum- Another art museum featuring many famous Dutch artists.

If you intend on traveling to Amsterdam I hope you have endless amounts of fun. To be honest, I think it is impossible not to.

I agree with swenson0 don't listen to the junkies at all there is a lot more to Amsterdam than drugs theses are a very minor part of the city but it is a very safe city to be in. I have been there many times and never tire of the city it is a wonderful place to go one bit of advice I can give you is go on a bus and boat trip round the city, if you go down the main street from central station (it is called Damark) a short way down on your left you will see Amsterdam city tours they do some very good tours of the city you can get a combined boat and bus tour which is well wort the money they will even take you to the Diamond factory as it is called where you can see them cutting and polishing the diamonds, another bit of advice I will give you is don't eat at any of the restaurants in Damark while there is nothing wrong with their food they are all very tourist ordinated if you want to eat go off the beaten track a little and go down some of the side streets it is perfectly safe to do this and the food will be even nicer and cheaper.
enjoy your trip to this great city
