Greeks have very good diet habits, in general, or at least they used to. Greek food is one of the healthiest in the world, and we use a lot of olive oil, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, instead of animal fats and red meat. At least traditional home made cooking is like that. And drinking is not so heavy as you think, they may drink heavy drinks like ouzo, but not every day and not in large quantities. In most countries I've been to (England, France, Germany), people drink MUCH more than in Greece.
Smoking is a big problem though, and if people didn't smoke, they would have much better health.

You are right about the smoking - drinking is not such a huge problem as Greeks have a healthy attitude to drink and mostly eat and drink at the same time - whether it's a meal and wine - ouzo and meze or spirits with crisps or nuts.
Also these statistics are from the previous generation - I think you will see more heart attacks / strokes etc as people get themselves more and more in debt - what used to be a stress free life style has change drastically! Also more young people are drinking and smoking than ever before - lots of girls are joining the menfolk in the smoking marathon which I think will change the old statistics. Another reason for a future change is more and more young people than ever before are eating crappy fast food - pizzas - hamburgers etc and drinking gallons of coca cola.

It's very stressful living in Greece, and Greeks work more hours than their European counterparts (and make a lot less money).

Don't fall for stereotypes, and don't form opinions if you don't actually live in the country.

my thought (sarcasm) is basically our country think more about everyone elses problems and try to take it all on board where as greece tend to just say yeah yeah yeah get on with it and just relax. so me thinks am movin to greece.

In other words, people shouldn't take things for granted and care for their health.

I strongly believe it has to do with having a life without stress. If you look at it, Greece and Japan have those statistics. It is a well known fact in Japan that people from Okinawa have the longest life expectancy. Okinawa is a group of islands in the south enjoying great scenery, good food and most of them are unemployed but very happy. The feeling of these islands is very relaxed. The same goes for Greek island, great scenery, good food and a lot of unemployment but happy. I found that on both groups of islands, people smoked a lot and drank a lot too. Maybe it is just all about looking at beautiful things that make you feel relaxed.

I don't know maybe they also have easy lifestyle and eat lots of fresh food olive oil salads and stuff. Japan has very healthy diet and they are top of this list so maybe healthy diet is the reason
