Are Holland and Netherlands the same?

Barkley Hound
Yes. They both refer to the same country. Technically Holland is in the Netherlands which includes a larger area. That is like the United States is called America but technically America is the combination of North and South America.

The Netherlands is often called Holland. This is not correct, as the provinces of North and South Holland in the western Netherlands are only two of the country's twelve provinces.

holland is part of the netherlands. just like england is part of the UK, or california is part of US. Holland is the biggest province of the netherlands, that's where amsterdam is located (noord holand)

no and yes..Holland is a place in the Netherlands.or as the Dutch people call it Nederlandse..During the war the British were send to Holland as the main base ,and most passed through this town/city.When they came back people would ask where were you ..they would reply Holland..this stuck as synonymous to the country..So when people say I went to Holland they might just mean the country of Nederlandse,
In France They call Nederlandse" Pay-Bas".Nederlandse means Lowlands ..Hope this helps..

I'm 1 up on you!!
Holland is in the netherlands, So is Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Etc... I went there for New years and had too much fun..

Yes, they are.

I agree with slippery, Holland is actually North and South Holland, two of the provinces of The Netherlands, but many people refer to the whole country as Holland as well as The Netherlands.

pingraham@sbcglobal.net
Technically, Holland - North and South Holland - are provinces in the Netherlands. See this site for the details:
