We're Turks, that's the bottom line of it. I don't find it wise to seperate Turkish people under the categories of "Purely European", "Lesser of a European more of an Asian", "An Asian with a little touch of Middle Eastern, seasoned with rémoulade". There is only one definition we can safely apply on Turkish people, and that is the fact that they are Turks. What we are considered by the rest of the world is not our problem. |

Depends on the considering side.
But at the end the truth is that they are just Turks, neither Europeans nor middle easterians.
Soem of them consider themselves as Europeans becuase of they were raised that way and they live that way. But others seem raised in opposite way and live like that so that you will see them as middle easterians. It is a mixed up culture that nobody could say exact consideration. And nowadays there is an unvisible fight in the country that some politicians tries to pull Turkey to be a middle eastern country as the other side tries to pull to European side. |

They like to play both the cards. Being the erstwhile rulers to the middle east countries, and also being a predominantly Muslim country, Turkey has very very close relations with middle eastern countries which are all Muslims. In fact so close that many a time Uncle Sam uses the leverage that Turkey enjoys with middle eastern countries. During the Ottoman empire Turkish script used to be very similar to the standard Arabic, and their vocabulary has many words that are distinctly Arabic.
It was only after World War I that Turkey under the leadership of Ataturk tried to do away with its Muslim/Arabic identity and proclaim itself as a modern secular state. Turkey has undergone a sea change since then and enjoys close proximity with Europeans. But sometimes it feels like as if they are consciously trying to project themselves entirely different from both of them.
Technically Turkey is eligible to be a part of Eurozone so let's say that Turkey is a European state, even though they themselves might be confused lot. |

Middle Eastern? I dunno, honest I doesn't care. If I can choice my own way I've prefer stand against E.U for several reasons. ( long story )
If this makes me M.Eastern I'm O.K about it .. at the bottom line I don't trust Europe and Europe's culture also attentions too . I thought they are so hypocrite.
In our culture we had a quote about Janus-faced people. I will try translate it .. "They can sell his own mothers for benefit" .. this is my vision about E.U. ( and most of politicians ; let's say % 99.999 of them .. Imho , they are so rotten )
Is this makes me Asian? O.K I'm a Asian then .. or M.Eastern? I'm still O.K about that too. |

turkey is both in asia and europe in geographical sense.
however, cities like Ankara istanbul is very europe like so yes life there is very european like.
however, in some places like villages life is more similar to Asians.
so i say, more European then Asian, but definitely not middle eastern. |

well people say that Turkey is a crossroads between europe and middle-east. Turks have mixed with both sides for many centuries. Some Turks may appear like they are from middle-east, however the majority a more linked with south-eastern or mediterranean europeans. You may be surprised how european many turks actually look if you saw them. |

Turks first and foremost.Turkey is unique as some turks can be europeans and some not depending on cultural ties and ethnic background.
Certainly not middle easterns, turkey isnt in the middle east and turks didnt come from the middle east either.
If it was so clear turks werent europeans there would be no discussion of joining the EU or playing in european sport competitions or singing in eurovision zones ect. |

Not as Europeans, that's for sure. I don't know if they're Middle Eastern either, but in my book they're Muslims first, and totally different from Europeans.
Religion has a lot of impact on determining who's who. Turks are simply Asian, Turkic, alien to Europe altogether. Why do you think European nations dislike them? If you say religion doesn't play a part in your book, it really means that you yourself belong to a non Christian religion. It's the Christians who rule not only Europe, but the world. |
