Are all Greek guys like overgrown children? |
Most greek guys I know seem to be still kids. I mean even at 40 they still dont have their lives together and are still hanging off Mummy and Daddy for money and everything.
The Mother calls them 20 times a day to ask them if they have eaten and where they are, and they dont seem to beable to do anything without her.
Havent the parents ever heard of "tough love" or "cutting the apron strings".
Or is it more to do with the parents wanting to keep their children dependent on them, so that they will keep control of their lives?
Seems a bit over the top to me! And a bit pathetic! Additional Details Lol I take it you are a Greek guy Platipus! No I would have to correct you there, the Greek men deffinatly are an extreme case.
I mean 40 years old, with your Mother calling you all day everyday - its a bit sad. |

Yes, they are very much. In generally greece nowadays people marry very late- men find it very strange to marry in their 20's and usually think about it in their late 30's....not all, but the majority....
Their families want them to start a life, but at the same time they allow them to relax, they are not forceful enough....
I also have found it very strange when I hear Greek men in their 30's saying that ' they have lots of time ahead of them' and that they are so young....They dont even rent on their own,,,they hang on to their parents for convenience.,,,
Anyhow, this is the situation in big cities....In smaller towns they do grow up faster, marry and have families.
P.S. Mariecat85, things are not as you say. I live in Saudi Arabia at the moment and believe me the family ties here are stronger than greece,,,,much much more......to the extend that traditionally families meet every 2 weeks to talk about any problems arising and how to help each other....
but men marry at an average of 25! and start building families....and also take care of their elders. They dont sit and say,,,oh I am so young at 30!
They dont say oooohhhh, I am soooo scared to marry and have children,,,,,,that is ridiculous.
Here they are proud to be married and bring children. The same in neighbouring countried like Syria for example...and Syria has much much bigger financial problems than greece! but hey, they manage.
So I think that people in big cities in greece have to get a grip! |

I agree almost in everything except the fact that still hanging for money.
Many Greeks are still living with their family but they are contributing financally instead of being a burden.
I don't think that is because of "tough love" so much (of course its a factor" but this is a way to avoid rent payment and with that way (before getting married) it gives them a way to save some money for marriage or start their own bisiness.
The mothers indeed call them lots of times (that also depends on how they have let her to act this way) and she calls to ask if he ate or what to cook fo rhim.
Greek woman (mothers or girlfriends) enjoy to treat their son/bfriend like a king. Its like in our blood....
Its not about controllling their lives, its about convienence.
New generation things are different. Most of Greek guys go to study to University so they learnt to live by themselves from 18 years old.
You are a little bit exaggerating here, the things are not like in the "big fat Greek wedding", at least not anymore.
So any comments like "pathetic" are a sign of hate and ignorance.
@Platypuss is not Greek |

I'm from a greek family and they're really family orientated and the women think the world of their sons especially but all my male greek family have done really well for themselves, own their own company etc. so no they're not dependant on their parents. |

Lol! It's a bit of an exaggeration but you may have a point. In fact, I once pointed out something like that and got overly thumb downed. I think it has to do with a family oriented way of life and, yes, I agree, it does have much more to do with Greek men than women. |

Yeah, it is true... All Greek men act like children but isn't this waht women love about them and always try to fix? |

Greeks have family ties unlike most westernized countries. Our parents actually care about us and show it.
And why is it sad? Again, if you're not in the culture you just don't understand the family ties.
Take this for instance, in most westernized countries parents can't wait for their children to move out, or they make their own children pay rent to live there. Greeks would never do this, it's incomprehensible to a Greek parent. Greek parents care more and would never do such a thing. Ok maybe they don't care more than other parents, that statement of mine is a bit extreme. What I mean i that they help their children do the best they can by providing them with shelter, this enables their child to start working and save up so when they are ready to move out they are not financially burdened by a big mortgage.
Calling numerous times throughout the day may be a tad extreme, but I know of no Greek men that get called that often from their parents.
Also, I don't think Greek men hang off their mummy and daddy any more than other men do in other cultures. Where I come from in Australia the Greek men are fairly independent and are mainly professionals such as doctors and lawyers, also the richest man in my capital city is Greek. |

I dont know about Greek Family structures but just take a look at what happened recently when Riots broke out all over Greece and for over a week because a Greek lad was shot dead by Police and it was not just the boys/teenagers it was grown men as well. What was the root cause of that ? maybe what you are saying has a connection in that grown men are not able to get off by themselves and create their own families and lives and get tired of having mom all over them, maybe its something in the way the family/Greek Society and hence the economy works ! |

I dont know where you come from but I have never heard of that. The Greek guys may get babied all the time but they dont hang off their parents to live. Obviously your from london or something because the Greek guys where I am from are totally independent. |
