True, Holland and The Netherlands are not the same. Ask a Dutchmen where he comes from and some will say Holland. We kind of mix things up. Holland has a slightly more nationalistic meaning then The Netherland. Go on give me the thumbs down but it is true!

I must agree with Chris T. It is amazing that there are so many people out there that speak of Holland as if it were a country.

To all of you out there the country is called the Netherlands and Holland is just an area or county by British standards.

Biaggio
DUTCH is the adjective for anything that refers to something from the Netherlands (dutch is also the language, the people). NETHERLANDS of course, is the country.

don't get your undies in a bunch over the Hollands/Netherlands thing. most of the dutch people i talk to everyday refer to their country as Holland rather than the Netherlands. "The Netherlands" is the correct name, of course, but for conversations' sake, "Holland" is used more.

Chris T
I hate when people call The Netherlands "Holland". Holland is a county of The Netherlands not an independent country.

Dutch is what English-speaking people call residents of The Netherlands, or the language they speak.

S J H
the country is called the netherlands. the citizens are called dutch. some people call the country holland. this is incorrect..the country is made up of provinces..zuid holland and noord holland are two of them.

Yes, but there is no Dutch language equivalent for it. People in the Netherlands call themselves "Nederlander".

DchrisV
people from the netherlands are called dutch, not neatherlanders or something like that.

Mac
Dutch is what you would call those that are from the Netherlands, which is also called Holland. Dutch is also the language they speak.
