as you know it's difficult to generalise as there are friendly and not-so-friendly people in every culture.

I've been to Russia several times and I can honestly say the people are friendlier outside of central Moscow. In central Moscow there are more people in shops / taxis / restaurants etc who will try to rip you off as they see you as just another tourist. Don't get me wrong - I love Moscow and wanted to live there, but you'll have to put up with a bit more cr*p than other cities.

As for meeting people in bars and clubs and that sort of thing Ive never been single in moscow so I don't really know what to expect there.

Outside of moscow is where the russian hospitality really shines. In general these people are less focused on what they can get out of you, and are generally interested in who you are. I recommend Sochi, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan for starters, but there are also lots of other cool cities.

It will help to make friends if you know a bit of the language (see http://listen2russian.com ) and it might also depend on what time of the year you're going. In winter it's bloody cold outside so the chance of meeting friendly people by accident is a lot harder since the Russians like to have house parties and that sort of thing.

Also, check out these forums as there are many people there who have travelled to Russia alone, who might be able to give you some good advice:

I hope you have a great time!

Jonathon.

The Russians are very friendly. True, we do not smile much which can seem weird at first. But we are open and friendly, once you get to know us, and helpful and very hospitable.

Enjoy your trip!

In Russia there are Russians, so you'll meet Russians, and have a totally Russian experience. As for meeting Russian women, just walk up to them and tell them in Canadian that you are not Russian, and they'll be all over you, which is why most non-Russian guys travel to Russia alone - a lot like Bangkok, Thailand.

I've gone alone to Russia several times. I have to say, each time I met amazing people and have friends for life. use the internet to find some before you go...

Hi fellow Canadian, I recently moved to Moscow and I love it. One of the best things about Russia is the people. They are very friendly and genuine. They only thing is that not a lot of people speak English. But, if they do they will definitely want to talk to you. Have fun!

The Russians I know are friendly, warm and ready to help. It's true what the first answerer said they may not smile too much, but I find it normal and prefer that to the artificial smiles for smiles' sake. I'm sure you'll have no problems meeting people and making friends.

Russians tend to like Americans more than canadians, at least that was my experience. I'm going back again in November. It'll be COLD and the people will be grumpy during that time (cold without snow yet) but they like to meet Americans. They also like Australians. Just tell them you are one or the other. They kinda think of canada the same way as Ukraine.

No we are not. We appear friendly on Yahoo! Answers, but in reality we are all evil, AK-47-wielding psychopaths and terrorists.

Enjoy the trip! :)

Generally I agree. However it rather depends on the colour of your skin. If you are black or have dark skin beware of extremists.
