Are there any countries where an American accent is considered attractive? |
Foreign accents - it almost doesn't matter which one - are considered attractive in the United States. However an American accent doesn't seem to go over too well in Europe or other westernized nations. I'm wondering if there are any countries where an American accent is considered to be attractive? |

Only other English-speaking countries will even be aware that you have an American accent. If you travel in countries where the official language is something else, the people wouldn't for the lives of them be able to distinguish whether your accent is American, British, Belizean, or who knows what other shade. To them, it's just "someone whose native language is English" - I remember being totally blown away by the realization that there are regional differences in English when I first visited the nglsh-speaking world. In school, you never hear about accents (I grew up in Europe - people there try to learn what they think is Oxford Englsh, but t's pretty gruesome to listen to, you'll see). Europeans do, however, have their own ideas about national stereotypes. Americans are generally regarded as especially good fun. This is meant in a positive way. Western Europeans love America. It's what we grow up with on TV, you see. As for how American accents come across in the English-speaking world, my impression is this: The British will think of an American accent as pretty refreshing, and females seem to like it a lot (I used to have one for a while when I lived in Phoenix, and when visiting London, I made a lot of friends with it); Australians generally tend to like Americans anyway is my impression; New Zealanders seem to roll their eyes a bit at American accents, because they speak more quietly, and tend to dislike the expansive behaviour commonly associaed wit Americans; the irish will probably think of it as not too different from their own; Canadians may not even notice you have one, unless you're from the south; and Scandinavians will think of it as a proper, movie-like accent, the type they know from their TV (we don't dub). |

If you have this American accent when speaking the native language of the country you visit, that would be considered very attractive. |

Eastern Europe!
In Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, etc.), the people are fascinated by Americans. Plus, our money goes a lot further there than in Western Europe.
And, they have a lot of beautiful women who will want to come back with you. |

Growing up in Canada i never thought of myself as having a accent. It wasn't till 1978 when i went to visit California. Needless to say i met people from all over America and I mean Mexico as well. you know what i found out? I love accents, sometimes I'll ask dumb questions just to hear another person with an accent speak. even here in Canada there is accents. have you ever met a cape Breton or a Newfoundlander. I'll tell you, you have to really listen close to understand, but i love accents. and so that's the way it is. Have a nice day. |
