Are there any dangerous fish/animals in the sea by the greek islands?

Like if you have a sailboat, is it safe to swim from the boat to the islands (cause it cant park by the beach, too shallow), are there no dangerous animals like sharks, venomous fish etc?

I have seen a shark near Pefki, Evia, 1997 !

There are sharks in the med ( even the great white has been recorded)

However you are not likely to bump into one or even whales. depending on your destination it is wise to check out the flora/fauna in the local area. As for the sailboat, check before sailing on local conditions and currents, ask local fishermen etc where it is safe to sail.

No, of course not! The waters are shallow and the only danger you can encounter are some jellyfishes!
There are sharks in the Mediterranean but far away from the coasts. I've never heard in my life of a shark approaching the coast, and I had been living in a coastal town for nearly 5 years!
Don't listen to some people above.

the only dangerous animals in the sea are the fyromians and albanians trying to swim to Greece and illegally enter.

There's just a lot of jellyfish and urchins.
My sister got stung by one and I stepped on an urchin last year and it honestly gave me hell for a week.

belltech123
sure there are sharks, and stingrays most probably in the shallow waters, in deep waters you can also stumble over killer whales.

Sharks only

I want to answer you truthfully. I have family in Corfu (one of the Greek islands). One time many years ago, in the 40's or 50's, there was a shark attack in very shallow water in Corfu right near the town. The teenage girl was killed while her boyfriend tried to save her. But since then there hasn't been an attack that I know of. Every so often, sharks are sighted from fishing boats, so they exist, but attacks are rare even as they are in the most shark infested waters! I, myself am scared of sharks, and find it very safe in Greece to swim and snorkel.

If you are talking about OTHER animals, then you need to sort of watch out when you are stepping on rocks in the water because there ARE sea urchins. I have never stepped on one but I see them all the time and people step on them very frequently. They can't swim so the only danger is if you step on one. I swim over them all the time. there are also jellyfish occasionally - i was stung once as a child and it hurt quite a bit for a few minutes and that was all. But that was while playing on the shore, so that would be a concern regardless of where you access the sea, whether from a sailboat or the shore.

I suggest not swimming at night, although many people do, but that's when they say the sea life is most active.

To finalize, I would say it is VERY safe to swim from your sailboat!

No, not at all. There may be some jellyfish that sting, occasionally, not really dangerous, just unpleasant. But you see them from the boat, if they are around. The clear completely uncoloured ones don't sting, just the coloured ones do.
As for sharks, there are some harmless species called galeos that we eat with garlic sauce. You are totally unlikely to meet them, because they avoid people. We are their enemy, not vice versa. I've never seen one, and I travel on the sea a lot.
