Are we really living better than our great great great grandparent? |
Ok, so they didn't have internet, cars, airplanes...
But they used to read books to eachother, go to balls and dance valses while we are just looking at our computer, calling shaking the heads "dance"...
They used to stay in hot water in hammams and sang songs had fun and what we do is to take a quick shower.
They used to eat with hundreds of friends more than 3 courses while we are only grabbing a bite for lunch!
So tell me, what do you think?:-) Additional Details HighT: my answer will be 60s i guess
or very far in the past like 1700s :-) |

I don't need to go so far back. I know for a fact that I am living better than my two grandmothers. As I had said before, two sides of my family are villagers. Both my grandmothers worked in farms under different conditions, they were suppressed by their husbands and were beaten occasionally, because that was quite acceptable then.
They were born in about the same time with the republic. So, they were the first generation, before all the revolutions were made. And it is the Turkish revolution and the republic that made it possible for them to send their children, be they boy or girl, to public schools. My parents had the best education there was in their time. And they had their own children and gave them the best education there is, too.
Sure, there were good sides to the traditional living, but the good things about this life outweighs the not so good things. You can still read books to your loved ones, go to private parties, sing songs and stuff. It all depends on your intentions and how you plan your life. |

No :)
Every generation has the delusion of living better than the previous (According to who and what?). So, no. And I don't really believe in comparing generations and whining about losing values of the past and so on.
In a Dostoevski book I read, which was written in 1800s, an old man was complaining about young people being very lazy and corrupted :) I'm sure those young people complained about the same when they got old. |

No, we are not!!!!! I wish I could live in 50's or 60's. We are living like robots. If you could travel back in time and live in any other era, what time period would you want to live in? |

It really depends on what you say or mean by "Better" they had a much more simple life with fewer expectations and greater fulfillment and contentment. We have more of life's luxuries but are stressed out more and life is much more complicated people have higher expectations and when that doesn't come into being they feel demoralised. One must be happy with one's own lot in life, that is the secret. |

Well not better but happier I guess.
We have everything now in terms of technology and benefits but these also makes greed rise up. The more you have the more you want to get. This greed makes people unhappy and stressed. I dont remember people being depressed 15 years ago , or taking anti-depressants. |

I love my Times....
I can't think how much better I would live with no telephone, no tap water, no electricity, no vehicles (mentioned, not in the right order..) etc. etc. As for the "socializing" part, it is up to us to make it better and better. If we try, we can find time for friends and leisure or fun time.
*she sings* You got to give a little, take a little..
I don't know why it just came into my mind!!!! Maybe it has some meaning... ;)) |

I don't think we are. True we've had amazing technological advances with the internet, cars, phones etc.
Sure they lived shorter than what we do now, but they had more "life" than we do.
"It is not length of life, but depth of life"- Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Nowadays, you don't even know your own neighbor while you chat with people from the other side of the world who could be some sicko for all you know.
Children no longer have a "childhood". They're not able to be children and run around the neighborhood. Parents push their children too much. You hear of kindergartens going to learn other languages while they haven't even mastered English.
Life has gone hectic. Now it's just all about "me me me" and about making the most money.
Compared to them, I think that we are probably the less polite of all generations and also the most perverse, with the availabilty of porn etc right at our fingertips.
There's a sense of innocence that has been lost with our generations. We have more life, but less quality of life. |

I bet they did! We don't seem to have much social life anymore, everyone is stressed for no reason really! I don't agree with today's lifestyle, so I am boycotting it! |

This might be true, but consider all the terrible laws that were around at that time and how much disease there was. This was because of lack of knowledge and technology. So I would say we are living much better than them. |

Yes, absolutely we are..
Thinking only about washing machine, dish washing machines, refrigerater, deep frieze, vehicles.. etc more than enough to reach a decision.
But for 1700s, i am not so sure... Those times should be better. There were no "rifle" and people was living courageously... |
