Arrive Amsterdam at night ?!? |
Hey guys, I am planning to take the easyjet from UK to Amsterdam, but the arrival time will be at night 21:15 pm. I haven't yet booked my accommodation, would it be far away from the airport to the city center ? How can I go to the city? Is it safe to travel at night time as I might be going there alone? Pls help, needs advice. Additional Details One more enquiry is that I will be going alone, do you think I should live in private ensuite or dorm room ? My concerns are that this is my 1st time travelling alone and also I am an Asian girl, also I heard that people taking drugs in hostel, but living in private room is very expensive for me, what can I do? thanks for advice. |

50 euro by taxi, 20 mins to central station
2 euro by train, same 20 mins
you should had booked accommodation, as it's usually overpriced around central station. 180 eur/nite in ibis, there's around 100 eur/nite in questionable 3* hotels across the road. 60 euro/nite most hostels if you don't mind sharing with 8 or 10 more, 80 quid for double rooms ... enjoy |

You can take a train from the airport to Amsterdam. It's safe and it only takes about 20 min. |

If you arrive by plain it's easy to go to Amsterdam central station by train.
Be careful with your luggage. Their are people who start talking to tourists just before the train stops at one of the stations on their way to central station. And their friends try to take your bags because you don't pay attention and get out of the train wen it stops.
If you arrive late, and you are probably tired, why don't you book a place for the first night to be sure. Running around in a big city (no matter were you are in the world) were you don't know the way is never a good idea, especially not wen you are tired from a long plane trip.
the official tourist info from Amsterdam is

The rough guide or the lonely planet have a lot of info about Amsterdam. Lonely planet has also some info on the Internet.

or check the youth hostel, Amsterdam has 3.

I would not feel unsafe traveling with luggage through Amsterdam alone as a woman. But I'm Dutch so and I know were to go to in Amsterdam. |

We arrived about the same time. Took the train which is frequent, easy & safe. Once you get to the station, the bus station is right outside, but we couldn't figure out which to take, so got a taxi into town, can't remember how much but it wasn't too pricey. |
|

Where am I?
 |
If I were you, I would at least book the first night ahead.
It hard to find a good place at that hour of the night, especially if you don'tknow your way around town.
Yes, I know that they are using drugs in the average hostels or have bed bugs( my husbands experience when he went to Amsterdam the first time)
Book at the hostels listed below, I know thery are good. |

Try www.hostelworld.com for inexpensive accommodation. I've used it for Italy twice, Spain once and the Czech Republic once, and it was fine. |

The Nederlandse Spoorwegen Stoptreins from Schiphol airport to Amsterdam Centraal do not work at that hour. Suggest you book a room at the Etap Hotel which is in Badhoevedorp, near Schiphol. The hotel runs a free shuttle to and from the airport but you'll need to email them and find whether it would be available at the time you mention.
I advise against going to the city at that hour, since crime against tourists is high in Amsterdam and AVOID taking a taxi to Amsterdam Centraal. Sadly, there are a lot of illegal migrants in Amsterdam and other parts of the Nederlands, who target foreign tourists. A cab will cost you EUR 50 and a room at Etap will cost just around the same or a bit more...which is a small price for safety and comfort.
The next day, you can take the free shuttle from Etap Hotel to Schiphol airport and travel by a Stoptrein to Amsterdam Centraal to do all the sight-seeing you like. The hotel is priced fairly cheap, as compared to others in Amsterdam. It is run by the French hospitality chain, Accor. You can check their rates, availability and reserve at

The airport is about 20 minutes from the city center - You can take the train from the airport but if you want to be completely safe then book a hotel and take a taxi straight to it when you arrive. |

I`ve just arrived back from amsterdam this mornin.. I found the City very safe and cosmopolitan. There`s plenty of drugs but it`s not the hard stuff, and because it`s cheap, addicts won`t mug you for your trainers. (Like they would here in England)
I wasn`t hassled by any Dealers in the City or anybody really!
I agree that us British are the most annoyin TossPots over there.. but they`re just noisey. I think the Turks or the Gypsies are more dangerous.
Being an Asian Female shouldn`t be a problem as the place is totally mixed!
Oh and 21:15pm isn`t really that late in Amsterdam so don`t worry.
Infact the only problems I had were finding free Toilets (if you don`t have 50cents on you then you got a problem) and cash machines. |

Airport 2115. I know the flight well. Clear airport baggage by 2145. Take the train to Central, just follow the " Trains " signs within Schipol Airport, it is easy. (usually on 3 platform) Buy a ticket in the station at ticket office **first** ! Arrive at Central around say 2230 2245 latest. DO NOT GET A TAXI !! They are absolute savages! (and make good punch bags for me !) Read this carefully now .>>>
Go to The Corner House Budget Hotel (I know the owner well) It is 40 euros for a single ensuite basic room with TV and is clean quiet and in a very good part of the city near Dam Square. From Central Station just walk about 1/2 kilometer along DAMRAK ( a busy main strip and quite safe) and turn RIGHT down ZOUTSTEEG a very small lane leading quickly into GRAVENSTRAAT which simply brings you alongside The Corner House. Go into the bar for reception and a key. Amsterdam is quite a safe city but don't wander around after you are settled at that time. It is a nice afternoon / evening place and very clean with a great atmosphere. If you choose * best answer * to this and put your email or make " a temporary user email " (to ward off cranks and sick lunatics) I will email you and guide you more. I know Amsterdam very well and know many good people there. You will enjoy it very much ! Here is the link for The Corner House.
http://www.hotelcornerhouse.nl/ 0031 (0) 20 624 13 26. Do not use the first zero in Holland.
Please ring them in advance for a room and if they have one GO STRAIGHT THERE cos it is ideal for what you will need. Also the " night man " is (odd but ) very strict and no idiots get past him whatsoever. Have fun in my " second home " city !! Good Luck. Give my love to "The Dam" !
p.s. It is NOT full of junkies...just that some losers attract the odd drug victim cos they look like dozy drunk tourist prats who are mainly English, and England is awash with sad angry alcoholics (e.g Athens 23 May 07 ) and negative junkheads so ignore that rubbish !! |

1. Take Trains or Cabs if there aren't any.Safety is more than money. After midnight there might not be any trains.
2.It (Amsterdam)is moderately safe depending on whether you know what you are doing or getting into. You can travel alone 4 sure but have to be very aware.Drugs are being used all over the place and alcohol, you might get harassed by young boys your own age,you might also be helped by some of them.Don't let yourself ge drunk or drugged.Check out the contacts you have there,if any.Never visibly carry big amounts of money cash.
3.Do things in the morning or during the daytime. You avoid a lot of fools that way.
4.Don't trust anybody without wooden shoes.
5.Avoid big cities and go for more rural places.Amsterdam can be a stressing place. It is also very crowded.
6.Public transportation is very adequate and cheaper than
taxis ,much cheaper in fact.
7.Bring more money than you expect to spend. |

1st advice. Be careful. Amsterdam is dangerous and full of junkies. You should already have some accommodation since there are some "hotels" where I rather sleep at the airport than there.
Stay at least one night in an prebooked hotel and if you want you can check for something else the next day, but at night in Amsterdam? Take care of your stuff. |
