Yes you do. The UK isn't part of the Schengen Agreement (the facility by which internal European borders have been eliminated) so you need a passport to get into Europe, and more importantly to get back out.
Once you are in the area covered by the Schengen Agreement you can move freely between countries (i.e from France to Italy) without needing to show your passport... |

YES! Never travel without one. Always take your British passport with you to prove you are from the UK. How can you prove that you are British and not just putting on an accent?
Do not travel without one. YES you need one. |

Of course you do ... how else will you prove you're a UK citizen? |

No. EU citizens have the option to use an ID card instead of a passport.

Half and half really, in order to enter the main European country bloc, and indeed to get back into the UK, yes you do. I THINK you can probably manage without to go to Eire, but that's about it. However, once on Continental Europe, you can cross international borders freely and without a passport, even though you are British..... |

Yes, you need a passport, but do not need a visa. Even camping grounds, hotels etc will expect to see a passport if you could even get that far without one. |

Agree with above , as you don't need a passport , BUT we (Brits) don't hold I.D. so we have no I.D. except for a valid Passport , if we had I.D. we wouldn't need a Passport for E.U.
And we don't want one ! |

Ask your government to introduce ID cards like in other european countries and you wont have this problem. But i think UK citizens are complaining way too much. In other countries in europe e.g. germany you are required by law to carry your id card with you at all times. |

Yes. Unfortunately. And I think its a complete farce. At over £100 for a new passport, we are effectively paying for our freedom. |
