Each Euro Country used it's own currency.
Until 2002 the situation was like this:
Austria used Austrian Schilling (Österreichische Schilling, ATS)
Belgium used Belgian Francs (franc, BEF)
Finnland used markka (FIM)
France used French Franc (FRF)
Germany used German Marks (Deutschmarke, DEM)
Greece used Greek Drachmas (δραχμή, GRD)
Ireland used Irish Pound (punt Éireannach, IEP)
Italy used Italian Lira (ITL)
Luxembourg used Luxembourgisch Franc (LUF)
the Netherlands used Dutch Gulden (NLG)
Portugal used Portugese escudo (PTE)
Spain used Spanish peseta (ESP)

Until 2007 Slovenia used Slovene Tolar (SIT), and until this January (i.e. 2008) Cyprus used Cypriot Pound (CYP) and Malta used Maltese Lira (lira maltija, MTL).

They used their native currency.

The UK does not use the Euro.

t_maia2000
many national currencies: Deutsche Mark (D-Mark) in Germany, Spanish Pesetas, French Franc, Italian Lira, Belgian Franc, Dutch Guilders, Austrian Schilling, etc.

Changing all these currencies was quite a hassle and unpractical for the economy. So European politicians got rid of them.

Each country had their own currency. There's only 15 or so countries in Europe that use the Euro.

it depends on what country. the euro was the first universal coin. for example, in Germany, there were marks, and in France there were francs.
