Best resort in Algarve?

We are planning our holiday for next summer (2009) and we are thinking of going to the Algarve.
We would like a really pretty, traditional resort that has a good mix of things to do in the day(boat trips, shopping, walks, quiet beach) and bit of night life- good mix of resturants and bars.
We are couple in our late 20's and next summer our daugther will be 1 and a half.
Any ideas?

albufeira is really nice vilamoura is really posh

mikeywills
We have stayed there a couple of times, once in Albufiera old town very pretty lots of little cafe and interest for the day. The second times we stayed in vilamoura, this is a amazingly clean and beautiful new seaside resort, its where the posh ones go, the harbour has some of the best boats I have ever seen on display, it can be a bit on the pricey side here though. So if its more sensible budget your after I would go to albufeira and take a day trip to vilamoura.

Check out "Boca do Rio Resort", the perfect combination between ocean and river... Next to Portimão and Praia da Rocha... Has constant free boat rides from the river, departing from the hotel's marina, to the beach and the restaurant area on the other margin..

Olhos d'agua just outside albufeira its very peaceful fidhing village with a few hotels

got back from albufeira 8/1/08 very nice place, old town is best as its more traditional,in summertime the new town fills with youngsters especally" the strip" so just depends what you want. The beaches are great, even in Jan.

albafura
not sure about the spelling but it is a beautyful place to go ,lots to do , loads of culture , very cheap and friendly

I think Albufiera would probably be the best place for you to stay, but also try and visit Villamoura....this has a great marina surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants, and try and visit Lagos too.....this place has a really good beach.

You know what in Portugal I like camping is cheaper. but as a resort most are good and i like montegordo less crowed and Spain is just a few kilometres away.

If you intend to go during the Summer (July, august or September) you will not find a quite beach. During that period, especially august, Algarve is a huge confusion. Try to plan them to June. you will find nice and good weather and spend calm e at the same time exciting holidays.
I think that Albufeira is the place where you will find the biggest confusion in Algarve, although, if you don't want to rent a car it is the perfect spot because you have everything around. If you can rent a car, you should try "Boca do Rio Resort". It is a good resort, with excellent services. near the resort you have several good restaurants with very good Portuguese food, especially fish. Try some restaurants em Ferragudo. It much more typical than albufeira. In albufeira it seams that you still remains In UK, with so many English tourists.

You will love the Algarve, it is so friendly and beautiful, (they love kids) the food is gorgeous, the beaches are heavenly, and I am jealous!! ;-) Albufeira is GORGEOUS.. I would recommend there any day (I lived there for years) Villamoura is a man made resort.. that is about the only place I wouldn't recommend on the Algarve .. Enjoy and good luck xx oh and have a 'proper' chicken piri piri .. Augostos in the old town do the best.. xxx
