all the people who have answered this and are upset well bear in mind the UK just last year had to receive help from the red cross to deal with the flooding ,as a third world African country does, your constantly desperate for water [despite having a wet climate]like a third world country your electricity supply in some areas is so unreliable as to be a farce just like third world country and in your big cities it's a cross between tribal war fare and out and out revolution just like a third world country........work it out for yourselves

If poverty could be described as having to choose between a Nintendo Wii or a Sky TV subscription, rather than food or shelter, then yes.

no way. how the hell can we even compare ourselves to the 3rd world countries?

If you believe britain is a 3rd world country then maybe you should go to africa or somewhere and see how they're living

rosiereal
No, that's ridiculous. Things might not be perfect, but they are a hell of a lot better here than in some european countries. Even using the term 'third world country' is hugely insulting to people who live in genuine poverty.

lbelfer
yes

hmmm, a 3rd world country whoes currency is stronger than most others. Where there is little unemployment, wages are high, food costs are low and people are generally happy. Gordon Brown might be an idiot but that doesnt make us a third world country. Ive been to quite a few places in Europe and dont see hoe they are better off than we are?

Probably Portugal.

Thats absolutely ridiculous...we have more than any third world country can dream of so there is no way we are "the first third world country in europe" .

I've never heard of that, who said that? The only thrid world, or developing, country in Europe is Albania. I know it's recession time now and all that, but it would take a hell of a crisis for Britain to become a third world country, talkless of how the other European countries would look like. And I'm not form here, so it's not like I'm biased. I'm from "second world".

I think whoever said it was trying to be very funny and meant that there are many immigrants from third world countries in UK. I can't find any other explanation.

Um....certainly not!! I have been to many third world, or developing countries, inlcuding Lebanon, Zambia, South Africa and Botswana. The way of life over there is developing, and we are certainly not third world. We have a nanny state, where although a lot of people do live in poverty, people in general are provided for. We have an NHS (rubbish as it is sometimes) but we will always recieve medical care free, if you are unemployed, the government provides housing, and money for you (admittedly not a lot, but it is better than nothing!). We have free and compulsory education for everyone up to the age of 19 too, which most kids can only dream of.

We are deff not a third world country!!

Would you like to cite your sources - I haven't seen this anywhere, and I'm pretty sure it would have been in the news if this were from a reputable source

I´m not British, but who the hell said that? There´s a lot of countries in Europe that are far behind, including mine...Third world country...no way!!!!!!!

To those that said Britian is the first 3rd world country in Europe, please read this!!!!!!!!!!

Third World is a term originally used to distinguish those nations that neither aligned with the West nor with the East during the Cold War. These countries are also known as the Global South, developing countries, and least developed countries in academic circles. Development workers also call them the two-thirds world and The South. Some dislike the term developing countries as it implies that industrialisation is the only way forward, while they believe it is not necessarily the most beneficial.
Many "third world" countries are located in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. They are often nations that were colonized by another nation in the past. The populations of third world countries are generally very poor but with high birth rates. In general they are not as industrialized or technologically advanced as the first world. The majority of the countries in the world fit this classification.
The term "third world" was coined by economist Alfred Sauvy in an article in the French magazine L'Observateur of August 14, 1952. It was a deliberate reference to the "Third Estate" of the French Revolution. Tiers monde means third world in French. The term gained widespread popularity during the Cold War when many poorer nations adopted the category to describe themselves as neither being aligned with NATO or the USSR, but instead composing a non-aligned "third world" (in this context, the term "First World" was generally understood to mean the United States and its allies in the Cold War, which would have made the East bloc the "Second World" by default; however, the latter term was seldom actually used).

Although far from perfect Britain is a First World Nation.
We also have an advanced economy but I do think inflation is too high. 3rd world countrys are mainly the nations in Central Africa. Can Britain be put in that bracket? Hardly.

why??? I cant agree...there is no reason. Im wondering who is it called? inside Britain...then it is just bad humour lol I live in Germany and hadnt heard this "title"

I disagree. I say 4th world, where things are REALLY tough.

Not yet but it wont be long, the world is on the brink of another dark age because the USA and EU are very close to collapse and when that happens there will be allot of ethnic cleansing going on that will make what the Germans did in WW2 look like toy town, because there will be on one left who cares or is able to stop it.
Don't forget that it was the US and country's from the EU that stopped the Nazis if they had not the world would be a very different today
