I just spent 7 months in Crete and it is the biggest and most diverse of all the Greek islands. I recommend you stay in eithe Hersonnisos or Rethymnon as hHersonnisos has got more going on but Rethymnon is pretty central on the Island and most places of interest are no more than 1 hour away. Go to Lake Kournas, the Palace at Knossos, have a go at scuba, definately go on an organised bike ride (suitable for all ages), go para-sailing and walk down the Samaria gorge. Largest in Europe and 17km but a great day out. Can't wait to go back to Crete as there really is something for everyone!!!!!!!!!

The weather at that time of year will possibly be nicer in Cyprus & it's more family oriented whereas Crete has more for the partying singles crowd. Both places are gorgeous with plenty places of historical interest to visit. Both have great bars though Cyprus may be better for water sports.
Hope this helps, have a great time!

Crete, of course! Cyprus has to many tourist, too little soul.
Crete is a wonderful island, where you can eat the best of Greek foods and experience the best of Greek everyday life. The answerer that tells you that Crete only has Agios Nikolaos can't possibly have been many places in Crete, you can travel for weeks and find lovely places all over the island. Since water activities is important to you, stay close to/in towns like Rethymnon or Chania, or in the less crowded Sitia. Good bars are everywhere, good restaurants too. When you choose a place to eat, don't go to the big tavernas at the waterside, but in the back streets, and look for the place the Greeks eat themselves. Then you will get the best food.
In the beginning of September the weather will be perfect, not as hot as midsummer, but usually close to 30 degrees C.

cyprus for sure!!!!
its definitely the paradise island for vacation.
beaches are beautiful with an amazing night life, wherever you go (paphos, limassol, agia napa, nicosia, or wherever!) theres always something to do.
also, the mountains are BEAUTIFUL!
a lot of the hotels are really nice too (3 and 4 star hotels are equivalent to 5 star hotels of the US...lol!)

ngiapapa
They are both very beautiful and offer excellent accommodation, however Cyprus has a Western nuance while Crete is purely Greek. Does this help a bit?

Amymoni talks sense. I have lived on Crete for three periods of six months and it has a great deal going for it. Friendly people and, if you are street-wise, not expensive.
