Can a say a very big thankyou to the people of Russia and the soviet Union for freeing Europe from the Nazi's?

Since it was the Soviet Union who won world war 2 in the Great Partriotic war and the world knows this.So i just want to say a big thank you to the people of the Soviet Union for the bravery and courage they showed to defeat Hitlers and his Nazi's and for freeing europe from nazi imperialism.

Thank you very much. My greatgrandfathers would appreciate it, if they were alive that is.
It's very nice to see a person who doesn't hold the odd view that America won that war all by itself (by courageously bombing cities like Dresden)
Lenny, could you please tell me when the second front was opened? Was it '45 perhaps? And when did the war end, hm? Oh yeah - 45.
Mountain lady: no, most of the Russian people that live in Russia were NOT opressed by the Soviet Union. You were probably thinking of the Jewish emigrants.

punapetteri, of course you would be much happier if Hitler had won and you would get your little victory by default and maybe even bite off a piece of Karelia. Forgive us untermenschen for opposing your grand plan for a thousand year reich.

Mr.Speaker, why can't you take these things separately? We are not advocating for the Soviet Union here. The questioner wanted to say thanks to all the Soviet war veterans for defeating Nazi Germany. Is there something wrong with that? I'm sure your anscestors would appreciate that as well, unless they were collaborationists of course.

KATЯ
wonderful words :) unfortunately there are not so many war veterans still alive today to accept this "thank you" :(

Each time I'm in Russia, I organize things in order to be there
on " Dienn Pobieda" 9/05 - Nobody can imagine still today the weight of the Memory in seniors' mind, and in russian's minds more widely - Veterans are honoured on 9/05, and it's always a great pleasure for me to greet them, shake their hand, and say " thank you for for what did druzia - my country has much respect for your sacrifice" unfortunately most of those who were parts of the Sacrifice have been killed - just like poor US kids in the 44-45 last part of the war -

This time in 2008 on may 9th I'll be in Kiev - something else -

Being a granddaughter of four WW2 veterans (two grandfathers and two grandmothers), I think I have every right to thank you for your thoughts and question.

Actually, all the 15 republics of the USSR actively participated in that terrible war, not just Russia. If not for courage, health and lives of that generation, world history would be totally different. I don't even want to imagine what it would have been...

КАТЯ and Misanthropist: thanks, girls!

Stephane m: Victory Day in Kiev is always very moving and beautiful. Just a thought: you can also consider visiting other Ukrainian cities that played an important part in that war, like Odessa. This city you will never forget! :)

Despite all the atrocities committed by the Soviet Union, the Allies would not have won the war without the help of all the Allies together. Having the Soviet Union to hold the eastern front kept the Nazis busy on both sides, leading to their defeat. My father was on a US Navy destroyer in the North Atlantic in the early part of the war, escorting supply ships to Murmansk, Russia on the Arctic Ocean. I am grateful to those Russians and all the peoples of Eastern Europe for all they did.

Mr. Speaker
Oh yeah, they freed everybody all right by replacing one tyrant with another. Especially, they succeeded in freeing us, Western Ukrainians, some of us were freed so much, they didn't survive at all.

As I said before, shame on Russia for trying to be an advocate of the Soviet regime.

Yeah thank you very much for killing about 80.000 Finns while trying to invade Finland. Thank you for letting Finland kill over 400.000 Russian soldiers, we sure had a fun go killing them.

Thank you for enslaving the whole Eastern Europe, thank you for turning civilized people in to monkeys.

Yeah we sure appreciate the Russians, the true master race of humanity.

Oh btw, did you know Stalin killed over 30 million Russians while making the communist system "cleaner".

I wonder how great holiday place eastern Europe would be without the Russians and their guns...

Edit: Finland's plan was never to take more land from Russia than Finland used to have. Finland only wanted the land back it lost in the winter war. Finland would never have attacked Leningrad, as Mannerheim said Russians would never forgive us. Stalin should have said the same when he decided to take over Finland!

did you live in a country that was supposedly "freed" by the SU? If not, you are just speaking to the wind.

mountain lady
First: The Soviet Union did not win WW II, at least not alone.

Second: The Soviet Union then proceeded to enslave eastern Europe. They deserve no thanks for that.

Third: The people of Russia were oppressed by the Soviet Union, and they would not like your equating of the two.

lenny.wise
Guess they didn't teach all of the history about WW2.
The soviet union was an allies of Hitler and Nazi Germany, in fact they invaded Poland when Germany did.
After Nazi Germany took control of Europe (accept the UK), Hitler invaded the Soviet Union. While the Soviets fought bravely, it is not true that they alone won the war. The U.S., U.K. and some free Europeans opened a second front when they invaded France and kicked the Nazi power out.

Only for the Soviets to enslave Europe and Asia with Soviet imperialism. The Soviet Union killed more people than Nazi Germany did.
