Try the Greek islands once more. This summer they are not much populated.

I have been to Corfu and Rhodes about that time, both were pretty good - Rhodes probably livlier. Portugal and mainland Spain are both still warm at that time and are short flight times. Tunisia and Morocco are also worth a mention.Wherever you decide, have a good time and look after Mum if you decide on Tunisia they will try to buy her and offer you camels in exchange - not a good deal!

I'd recommend either flying to Sevilla and check out Andalucia (Also check flights to other cities down there like Granada, Malaga, or Almeria to save money)

Or, my first suggestion would be Lisbon, and go down to the Algarve, like Praia da Rocha for the beach.

Another idea is to fly to Napoli and drive around the amalfi coast, go see Pompeii, Ercolano, and the x- rated sculpture section of Napoli's National Museum of Archaeology. You can even go down to the beaches in Calabria or sicily, like Taormina is nice.

I think October won't be too dead at all anywhere you go in South Europe. It'll be a nice sized crowd compared to August and overall more comfortable.
Beware Italy is super expensive, but Portugal would be the best bet in my opinion. It was a great surprise.

How about going to North Africa instead? Morocco or Marrakesh or even Egypt?

You know you're asking for something impossible don't you?

Anywhere within a 4 hour flight is going to get dark at around 6:30 p.m. at the end of October.

However, if you are prepared to compromise on that one respect, then I would recommend travelling to Morocco or Tunisia. It stays pretty warm and, although quite touristy, you can get away from the tacky places - it will be reasonably quiet in October anyway.

Or, you could try one of the bigger Greek islands, like Rhodes or Crete, that don't quieten down too much.

Or you could try Santorini, which is a gorgeous island when it isn't swampd by tourists (October would be perfect).

Or there is Cyprus or Malta which stay warm and sunny into October and beyond and still stay reasonably lively.

Or you could go to Athens - Piraeus for some swimming is just down the road, and there's always plenty going on in the city.

Wouldn't recommed Canaries at the moment anyway with their forest fires!

There are some really nice parts of Spain that aren't too tacky.

How about up and coming places like Bulgaria or Croactia, not sure on weather in Oct though.

Four hours flying time from Dublin will get you somewhere warm rather than hot, let's face it. And as another writer has said, it will get dark earlier precisely because you are further south - you can't have it both ways!

My main suggestion is North Cyprus. Will still be warm, is cheaper than the south, and lively all year round thanks to an enormous student population. Mum and friend can relax by the pool or potter around winding streets of Kyrenia before tucking into a lovely lunch at a rooftop restaurant by the harbourside. Or perhaps she'd prefer to soak up the sunshine on golden, uncrowded beaches, or explore Roman ruins and atmospheric monasteries tucked in the mountains.

Hang on, I'm being ageist here - anything like my Mum and she'll be doing a spot of scuba diving, a quick jetski lesson, followed by nagging you to do some paragliding so she can video you! Then she'll be first to the lively bar around Kyrenia harbour, first in the spas at the five-star resorts at Bafra, and last out of the casino!

To keep that flying time down (and costs), fly to the south of Cyprus and cross the border into North Cyprus. Below are some good web site links on visiting North Cyprus - have a look.

My other suggestions are Malta and Madeira, but they certainly calm down in October - Northern Cyprus parties year round, if you know where to look!

From experience.get a cheap return flight to djerba(southern tunisia)...flight time 3hrs.Live on the edge and check in to a "carravanserai" in the capital Houmt Souk! Basic but incredibly cheap..with the added bonus of a cool room as even in october/november you would enjoy afternoon temperatures around 30'c and the sea 25'c.Aaah the smell of jasmine,sunsets over the desert...I want to go back myself!
