I use the venere.com site that a couple of other people have mentioned to book hotels in Italy (I live in northern Italy and travel often). After you select city and dates, you can sort by area of the city, price, ratings, and read reviews of specific places. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/#o=pric...

If you're looking for cheap and close in Rome, a good option may be the Hotel Romano (75 euro)http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse... It's very close to the Forum & Colosseum and within walking distance of two metro stops and the Termini train station.

Another option about 2 blocks to Roma Termini is the Serena (90 euro) http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/esquili...

Both of the above suited my needs.

You might be also interested in a stay at a convent or monastery in Italy. These tend to be some of the best lodging bargains available. There are a number of them in Rome. In some places in Italy, a monestary stay may be free. see: http://www.monasterystays.com/?show=page... or http://www.santasusanna.org/comingtorome...

My brother and his wife stayed in a convent in Rome and loved it. A niece and nephew later did the same and also recommended it. They're all planning to come back next year and want to stay again.

If you are interested in an apartment, there's a guy that responds to questions in the Italy section that rents one near the Spanish Steps. I've never seen the apartment and have never met the guy, but the apartment is in a good location - I've been to the piazza to take a photo of the fountain. http://www.acj.it/tritone/

If you're staying more than a few days, you might want to rent an apartment instead of staying in a hotel. Check www.guestinitaly.com

go to www.tripadvisor.com and usually you can find a lot of comments by previous visitors of the area that recommend the hotel for various reasons, including prices
