Sam

Can anyone suggest somewhere good to buy warm clothes for my trip to Russia next month?

I'm off to Moscow & St Petersburg for a week at the beginning of December and I understand it'll be about minus 10 degrees! I hate being cold though and so I need some new warm clothes and boots but have no idea where in London to start looking for them. Anyone have any helpful suggestions? Or experience of Russian winters even? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks guys.

go to www.frontofrussia.com or email alex@frontofrussia.com and get the following:-
One Ushanka hat
One Afghanka jacket and trousers
A pair of Valenki boots
A pair of fur lined mittens
A winter telnyashka

This will keep you toasty warm!

One word of advice: shop for socks, scarfs, gloves and hats when you are in Russia. Much cheaper and more practical there.

For boots I would just take some Ugg-boots (or a similar style). They should be a bit large so that you can wear them with 2 pairs of socks. For warm trousers wear jeans with long underwear or with pantyhoses underneath. Same with tops: strappy top, short-sleeved T-shirt, long-sleeved T-shirt and sweatshirt worn over each other go a long way in keeping you warm. Fleece-sweatshirts are great - they are inexpensive and keep you really warm.

I'm from Saint-Petersburg. It may be -10 degrees at the beginning of December but it's usually -2-3 degrees. We usually wear warm jackets and boots with natural fur. Don't forget gloves, a scarf and a hat. I think you'll spend most of time inside the museums and cathedrals. There're a lot of cafes in the center of our city and you can get warm inside with a cup of coffee.

:)
Everything will be ok) its +6 and some rain now. I dont think that it ll be an awfull weather at the begining of December. It will not be unreal cold. Last year we had rain instead of usuall snow at New Years night) Global Warming comes to Russia also)))
I wear the same "cold-clothes" from September to April + - some things)
Relax and welcome! Weather is not the biggest Russian problem))))

L.L Bean. I got a winter parka from there a couple years ago for when I lived in Canada and it would be -40 degrees (not kidding!) They have tons of lined stuff that is still comfy and not too bulky. I really liked their stuff that had the driweave lining, it was not too heavy or cumbersome. Check out their website and I think you can get a catalog too. They have some awesome boots (and house slippers...you will NEED those). And the stuff is for girls and guys too. Good luck and have fun.

Pack at least three thin polypro undershirts, one or two thick polypro undershirts, the same number of long underwear, durable nylon panty hose if you are wearing any dresses, at least two wool sweaters, one parka, one pair of wool long pants, two pairs of jeans.

Take at least six pair of wool socks, long.
At least three pair of silk or nylon sock liners.

Take one pair of winter boots with good tread for ice. Knee length mukluks are not a bad idea.

However you feel about this, know that furs are superior to synthetics in keeping you warm. I suggest if you feel any aversion to wearing furs or animal skins, you get over it and ask a blessing for the animal's soul. Maybe just buy them used, then at least you are not encouraging the retail market.

If you do go synthetic, consider going to Land's End or R.E.I. outfitters. Anything Polartec, goose down, sheep's skin is good.

Avoid wearing cotton close to the skin, as it will get sweaty and not whick the moisture away from your skin, and when that chills that is bad bad news.

Consider taking some good quality American clothing over there if you have a way of getting a good price on it and reselling it over there. Be careful of tariff or import laws there. Verify any advice you get, even mine, heh heh.

Oh, a pair of leg warmers, a pair of mittens which will go over your driving gloves, and a pair of good gloves are a must. Also ear muffs, scarf, a good ski mask if you can get one.

Russians are very good hosts, so I should think they will help you get anything you forget.

Ya vash zhelayiou dobrii iucpekhov, meaning I wish for you good future or fortune.
