From the details in your question I assume that you have applied for the US passport, in addition you also have a valid UK passport that has not expired, if that is the case you can still travel using your UK passport. It has to be the original though as nowadays photocopies are not accepted. However if the only passport you can travel on is the one at the US embassy, I'm afraid you won't be able to travel.

No. In fact, the odds are the airline won't let you on the plane because they will be liable if Dutch immigration do not let you in.

I shouldn't think so.

Vince has left the building...
YES, If the passport is valid you can use it, no matter how old it is. When you pick up your new passport they will make your old one invalid. Just make sure that it will be valid for the entire length of your stay, and preferably a bit more in case of emergencies...

You can definitely not use a photocopy!

-edit-

If you're a UK citizen you don't even need a passport but a valid EU-ID card will be sufficient to enter and stay in the Netherlands. Of course a valid UK passport will also be good.

If you're going to have dual-citizenship you can still stay in the Netherlands with only the EU-ID card, the U.S. will not make your UK passport invalid, only the UK can/could do that...

Check the official Dutch government website for details (in English) http://www.ind.nl/EN/verblijfwijzer/

And enjoy your stay in the Netherlands!

-edit #2-

I think we're all confused about what you're actually saying... Is the passport you want to use valid or not? If it's valid, you can use it, if it's not valid, you can't... This new passport that's at the U.S. Embassy, is it a U.S. passport or a UK passport? Has it been validated yet or will it be validated when you pick it up... Once again, if your old passport is valid as you say it is, why wouldn't you be able to use it?

no , you must have a valid passport

seabhcan
No. You need a valid in-date and current passport.

UK citizens don't have ID cards, but if you had, you could use that instead.

Driving license won't be accepted.

In Ireland, we can get a second emergency passport, or a second (Business) passport if the trip is urgent or important for business. Maybe the UK has a similar rule.

No! However when i was abroad once, i lost my Passport and the Embassy gave me a cover note, with a few official stamps on it, that lasted for a time period, (of which i can't remember, maybe a month or so). So i can't see why they can't give you some sort of temporary coverage.
