Can someone please settle an argument and tell me which CONTINENT russia is in?

Why does this question get asked so often? I understand that for some people living in itty-bitty countries that fit in one continent it can be confusing at first, so I shall explain once again:
Short answer: Russia has territories both in Europe and Asia.
Long answer: Russia started out historically in Europe, but successful colonization brought rich lands east of the Ural mountains (which are the traditional dividing line between Europe and Asia). Today about 3/4 of Russia's land is in Asia. The opposite is true for Russia's population (i.e. most Russians live in Europe). To further dispel any possible misconceptions you might hold: no, Russia is not part of the European Union, yes, it does participate in major European competitions, and no, the majority of Russians do not belong to any Asian ethnicity.

Roughly 80% of Russian territory lies geographically within Asia and 25% is in Europe. However, 80% of the Russian population lives in Europe and only 25% in the Asian portion.

You may be wondering, then, why Russia plays in European tournaments if most of the country is in Asia. The reason is because culturally and politically Russia is considered a European country. Russians are ethnically Slavic, which means they originated in Europe. Most of the population is in Europe and so is the capital.

I can assure you that Russia is fully in Europe, it takes place in all european politics, competitions like Euro 2008 etc. and has all european names, like irkutsk which is near asia but is clearly european.

Just a brief answer.
As for continents: Russia is situated in one continent (synonym - mainland), called Eurasia.
As for so called parts of the world: Russia is situated partially in Europe, and partially in Asia. The boundary between Europe and Asia on the territory of Russia goes along Ural Mountains.

Look at it on a map. As it extends further east than China, and almost touches Alaska, how can that be considered Europe?

Definitely Europe. It competes in all european tournaments (singing and sport) and is part of the EU. In my opinion that makes it european but it is like one of those questions like "Is scotland a country"
