Yes,you have to pay the £10 visa as it belongs to Turkey, and you need your passport.

northern Cyprus is not a recognised state therefore does not legally belong to turkey.

Why are people so prejudiced against us? I have replied to several questions about south Cyprus and I told people about the beautiful places there and of the friendliness of Greek Cypriots. North Cyprus is not much different.
Turkish Cypriots are very friendly, we have some lovely hotels and the best beaches in the world. We are not here to discuss politics and tell people how much Turkish Cypriots have suffered for forty years.
Yes, you can easily cross into the north. If you are an EU citizen it is much easier. You can enter Cyprus from south or north and stay in any part you like.
Do visit the Troodos mountain in the south, Bellapais and Karpaz in the north.

Correction: you CAN drive a rent-a-car from south to the north.

beverley1156
Yes you can,but be aware that if you are hiring a car in south you are not allowed to take it to the north. Both parts of Cyprus are beautiful with lovely people on both sides. You will always find a-----s anywhere you go ,so just ignore the politics and have a lovely time.

There is no charge for the visa to cross from south cyprus to North cyprus.
Just turn up at one of the crossing points with your passport, you fill out a slip of paper, which they give you at the passport booth (this is the visa) - it is stamped and you are through.

We do this several times a day sometimes, it is no problem.

You can do so and I would urge you to. I went to Northern Cyprus a few years back for my birthday - we stayed in Kyrenia (Girne) which is just lovely - a Venetian harbour, with fabulous old buildings and a castle, cheap restaurants serving excellent food and extremely friendly people. The north is less developed, and so much the better for it - if you want development go to the South, but if you want a taste of what Cyprus was like befor partition, go to the north. Remember that before partition, the main tourist areas in Cyprus were in the North, the South developed as it did because of the economic need - if it was being done now, it would be a lot more sensitively done, and you might have places that still gave you an idea of what they were like before tourism.. In the north you can go to Bellapais abbey, Hilarion castle, Famagusta, Salamis (ancient site) and so much more.
I know I will be given a negative rating by Greeks and greek Cypriots reading this - but the North really is lovely.

Yes, you can cross, and as mentioned before, the visa is £10 at the border. You can have a piece of paper stamped rather than your passport, if you prefer. Cross in Nicosia, and you can get a taxi to any holiday destination. Not sure if you already have a place in mind to stay, but there is more quality accommodation available in the Kyrenia (Girne) area than in North Nicosia itself at present. Contrary to previous comments, North Cyprus is a friendly place, and most Turkish Cypriots speak excellent English. It is not as developed as south Cyprus, and all the more beautiful and peaceful for it! Come and visit, and make up your own mind. See websites below for some good info links.

andreas
Yes you can, but turks that illegally live there destroyed that part of Cyprus...it is dirty and messy....free Cyprus is much more developed...

You can cross to the North and do not require a visa (officially there is no border to cross). If hiring a car in the South check that you can go North only a few companies allow this and you will probably have to get insurance at the border as you do when going the other way.
Cypriot £, Euro's, Sterling and Dollars are all excepted in the North and there are plenty of cash point ATM's about.
Avoid the European restaurants which are aimed at tourists and are charging UK prices (London prices in some).
If you have the time head for the Karpaz (pan handle) the most unspoilt part now being attacked by developers.
Girne Old Harbour is known as the Jewel of the Med but the down side is you will pay over the odds for a drink and eat at your peril.
There are many historic sites all cheap ,to visit and as well as those already mentioned The Blue House is highly recommended and cots about 3ytl for a guided tour.
Get in touch if you want any info on interesting route to drive.
Wherever you go in Cyprus I am sure you will have a great time.

Yes, you can and bearing in mind that I cross frequently I have never been charged £10 for the visa. You just hand over your passport at the border, they then hand it back to you with a little slip of paper that is your visa.

It is well worth the trip. The North is stunningly beautiful and the Turkish Cypriots are a kind, obliging and congenial group of people. Head into Kyrenia and if you want a little luxury at a very reasonable price book yourself a room at the Rocks or the Colony hotel. Both have websites. I now live in the North and it is my own little paradise.

pazzini1983
yes you can i did it in 01 but beware wher you go and make sure you have a room booked theres plenty of coaches but baree in mind half greek half turkish so there not very friendly up north.
