Valid travel documents in Europe are:

For citizens of a non-european state: valid passport and visa (if required)

For eurepean states who are not members of the European union: in general passport and visa (if required), there are exceptions for EFTA state members like Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein who my travel with their government issued ID-Cards or states which have concluded special agreements with the European Union like Croatia

For member states of the European union: passport or government issued ID-Cards. For countries who do not issue ID-cards like the United Kingdom a passport is required.

Some European member states have concluded special agreements for traveling between their countries even with passports or ID-cards which are already invalid. Those provisions apply to citizens of Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland

Under no circumstances you can travel to another European country just with your driving license.

The fact that there are open borders in continental europe does not constitute a right to travel without proper identification documents.

No, you need a passport or national ID card on all flights, even within Schengen. In June I travelled from Germany to Italy and at both airports I did have to show my ID card. Sometimes there is no passport control (sometimes they do check some passengers), but the airlines will check your identity. When you travel by car, you may be lucky never to be stopped within the EU, but sometimes they pick some cars and check the nationailty of the drivers.

virginia_maryland
you need a passport.

you'll never even get on the plane without it. You can't even get to Canada with just a driver's license anymore.

_____
No, you cannot fly from Europe to a non-European country without a passport. No airline will let you, they would be fined for doing so.

No, you need a passport or a recognised identity card with a photo on it.

You need a passport to go to Europe (and now you also need one to go to Canada and Mexico). Go to your local postoffice to apply. Unless you're in a hurry, don't pay extra to expedite the process. I got mine in two weeks just doing it the normal way.
If you plan on driving in Europe, you should obtain an International Driver's License (about $35) which will allow you to drive in multiple countries and can also be used as secondary identification once you're in Europe.

To cross a land border within the European Union you do not need a passport - but you do to catch a plane with most carriers.

So if you are driving from Paris to Madrid you will not need a passport if you are flying you do. You may also be asked for it when coming back to the UK

You don't need a passport to travel around Europe between any of the countries covered by the Schengen Agreement. There are no border controls amoung participating countries. The UK and Ireland are not in this agreement and so you will need a passport travelling to and from these countries. However, you can once in Europe, travel happily from Portugal, through Spain, France, Germany, Italy etc. with no border controls.
