I haven't been to Croatia, but I can tell you about Malta: No interesting beaches indeed, but Valetta, the capital is a very beautiful city (Italian Style), with the Palace of the Grand Metre of the Knights, Saint John's Cathedral, and the headquarters of each ethnicity composing the Order of the Hospitaliers. The three medieval old cities with their fortifications next to Valetta are really picturesque too.
The old capital of Malta, Mdina, is a little masterpiece, a tiny medieval city coming out of a painting...
You can pay a visit to the glass factories, where traditional Maltese articrafts are prodused (in hand).
And a cruise to Gozo, a small but interesting island close to Malta is an interesting experience too.
As for entertainment, there is a whole suburb, St Julians, where one has a choice of a great variety of clubs... |

Hi!
I've been to both countries, was spending my summer holidays in Croatia since I can remember until two years ago. Why I stopped going there, doesn't really matter.
Anyway, it's a tough question.
a) Both have wonderful beaches:
1. there's a wonderful beach on Malta - can't really remember the name, I think it's called The Blue Lagoon, with awesome scenery and clean sea. The film Troy was shot there. Really nice.
2. Croatia is much larger, and therefore has a lot of nice beaches. But if possible and if you decide to visit Croatia, you must go to Dalmacija (Dalmatia). It's a bit further, but the islands are great. Hvar, KorĨula and several other islands are awesome.
b) There's a lot of things to do and plenty of nightlife in both:
1. If you want to party on Malta, then St. Julians is the place for you. Lots of clubs and a lot of things going on.
2. Again, Croatia is much larger than Malta, but you'll get a lot of nightlife on Pag, which is very popular among young people this year (on this point I have to say sorry to my mates, that I couldn't come with them to Pag - I know you're having a wonderful time there - Pozdrav iz Ljubljane!). Also Dubrovnik and Pula have a vibrant nightlife as I heard. Otherwise if you go on the island of KorĨula to a town called Vela Luka - well better bring your monopoly with you. But the scenery is awesome, and the sea is very clean.
c) What else? Oh, if you are in those watersports, like Crazy banana boat etc., then it really doesn't matter where you go, those things are everywhere.
So it's up to you two to decide what would you like. Both have many to offer. Try to make a compromise (for example: this year go to Croatia and the next year to Malta, or the other way around; if you can afford it, why not visit both this year?).
Well, however you decide, I hope you'll have fun! |

For a good beach and nightlife combo...without a doubt the Dalmatian coast in Croatia! Most of the coast there is reminiscent of the Caribbean - nice sand beaches with shallow clear turquoise blue waters. As well there are many medieval towns and resorts that offer a nice mix of culture and entertainment. And the people there are extremely friendly. Malta is very nice, but in my opinion is a little more "stuck up" and really is not conducive to beach life. |

I haven't been to Croatia, so i cannot say anything about that but i am from Malta and am also a tourist guide so I know it inside out.
Malta is indeed a tiny island when compared to other Mediterranean islands with the possibility of offering so much more due to different landscape, however, Malta is Fun, it does have nice beaches (I personally prefer rocky ones where the water is very clear and is awesome for some snorkelling or why not try a taster dive), it's got a water slide park, easy ferry boat trip lasting only 15 minutes from the main island Malta to Gozo, which also deserves a visit (many nice beaches there!) and Comino where the Blue Lagoon is found is amazingly beautiful with its' turqouse waters and geological structures. And by the way there are no volcanic beaches in Malta, and the sand is NOT black at all... it's yellow to red in colour, depends on where you go.
Apart from Beaches, Malta has a very rich history dating back to 7000yrs ago when men lived in caves and built temples even before Stonehenge and the Pyramids... it would also serve as an educational trip because you can learn so much if you decide to take a cultural trip or two.
I would also suggest a visit to the Blue Grotto in Zurrieq, where you can take a boat ride and enter the many caves of the surrounding area, where the colour of the coral under the water is so beautiful, it's a magical experience almost especially as you pass under the main cave, the blue grotto, which some ppl also describe as an elephant's foot, as it looks like one set deep into the clear blue sea. Valletta, Mdina, the 3 Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua, the Grand Harbour, the Maltese Food, the clubs and bars filled with young ppl in Pacevile or St. Julians and all the fun things you can do during the day make it a place worth visiting... now it's up to you really... but don't be misjudged by the size of the island. It's what it' can offer you that counts! |

Happy travels! |

Malta has hardly any beaches - and the ones that exist are quite volcanic (black).
Croatia on the other hand...

I don`t really know about Malta. I haven`t been there, nothing I`ve ever heard about it is bad, but it isn`t exactly famous for its beaches.
In Croatia.... Well, I`ve been through most of the coast. The beaches are great, the sea is generally clean, and there are many new people to meet, without being too crowded (usually). You can get a ride in a parachute while a boat is dragging you around, or in those oversized car tires, or on a giant banana. It`s so cool!
In the evening you can go out... to a pizza place or a disco, and sometimes you have beach parties...
Hope this helped...
See you in Croatia! |
