Croatia - where in europe?

I said to my friend the other day that Croatia was in Southern Europe. I have looked up wikipedia and it is in Southern Europe but my friend called me an idiot and said that everyone knows that Croatian is an east european country, if you mention it to anyone they automatically think east european. Is that correct?

it's on the Blakans at the adriatic sea

ritadrita
Croatia is by Adriatic sea and also has a border with Hungary.I think is rather far from east. So,it is not an East European country.Other way, when Croatia was a part of Yugoslavia, there was "russian" regime, same as in East European countries. But this time is gone...

sic-n-tired
it is generally referred to as eastern, as are all the other countries east of the adriatic. and no, it is not asian. asia does not start until you get past the black sea, with the exception of turkey which straddles both .

The most exact term is: South-East Europe. It is considered to be in South-East Europe like all other ex-Yugoslavian republics, in geographical, economical and political way.
Term "east" and "eastern europe" refers to all countries that were communist and not part of EU, but eastern european is better term for Ukraine, Russia, Romania, etc....

richard_beckham2001
Croatia is a Central European and Mediterranean country, bordering Slovenia in the west, Hungary in the north, Serbia in the east and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the south. Croatia also has a long maritime border with Italy in the Adriatic Sea. These borders total 2,028 km altogether. Croatia has a strange shape (similar to a croissant) - similar to no other country in the world - which comes as a result of five centuries of expansion by the Ottoman (Turkish) empire towards Central Europe (although Croatia was never conquered by the Turks).

Our Man In Bananas
it's in the former Yugoslavia - the Balkans.

Across the Adriatic from Italy, and it is in Eastern Europe, but also, Southern Europe.

Hope that helps

Philip

Formally part of Yugoslavia it is an eastern European country in the south east of Europe but don't get confused with eastern Europe as in Soviet Block it was communist but not part of Warsaw pact and independent of USSR.

gemgem
It is definitely an Eastern European country. If you try to rent a car in Europe, and want to drive it to certain Eastern European countries such as Croatia or Bosnia, you might not be able to. So it is classified as such.

Well, said Alberto
Its both; its opposite Greece & used to be part of the Soviet controlled Yugoslavia.

srracvuee
she's correct it is East European

WiseOne
It all is dependant on one's opinion, for example, I think it is an Asian country.
