Totally Blunt
"In 1960 Turkish Cypriots were only the 18% of the Cypriot population. However, the 1960 constitution carried important safeguards for the participation of Turkish Cypriots to the state affairs, like vice-president being Turkish Cypriot, 30% of parliament being Turkish Cypriot, etc. Archbishop Makarios would be the President and Dr Fazil Kucuk would become Vice President.

One of the articles in the constitution was the creation of separate local municipalities so that Greek and Turkish Cypriots could manage their own municipalities in the big towns. This article of the constitution has never been implemented by the Republic and president Archbishop Makarios. Internal conflicts turned into full-fledged armed fighting between the two communities on the island which prompted United Nations to send peace keeping forces in 1964 (These forces are still in place today).

In response to a Greek-backed coup attempting to unify the island with Greece, Turkey invaded the island in 1974 and seized the northern third of the island, Turkish Cypriots in the south would travel north and Greek Cypriots in the north would move to the south."

The impression I got from this wikipedia piece was, UN (which says Turkey violated many resolutions) wouldn't be so unhappy if the attempted coup was successful and the Ĺźsland united with Greece. They don't care that the "invasion" of Turkey saved the Turkish Cypriot's lives. I'm sure the massacred Bosnians wished that they somebody to intervene and save their lives. After all those lives are gone, what are the resolutions good for?

You can read all about it in wikipedia.

I have to make some comments here because there is too much Turkish propaganda. Not so much for you but for the Turkish friends here, who love to feel that they are the ones living in unfairness.

1.EOKA was not a terrorist organization. EOKA is not to blame for every crime by the Greek Cypriots.

2.EOKA didn’t want to "get rid of the TC" even if they wanted, they couldn't. I was a secret organization moving in the shadows, how could they get rid of the 18% of the population?

3.The target was freedom. To get rid of the colonists and be free to unite with Greece, which at that point made more sense than independence.

4.Greek Cypriots volunteer to fight against the nazis because the British promised them freedom. After the WWII, the British forgot their promises. That gave birth to EOKA. Many of the members of EOKA were fighting against the nazis 10 years before EOKA.

5.When the Greeks were fighting for freedom against an Empire the Turks were fighting for the British to maintain a collony and after that to divide Cyprus.

Most of Cyprus's history is the same as Greece, under the same controllers. The difference is in the last 200 years, were we were sold by the Turks in 1878 for an agreement that said that England would give their support in a war.
Greece got its freedom from Turkey in the 1821 revolution.
Then in Cyprus after the 1955-19959 Revolution also in Cyprus, we managed to get our independence in 1960 from Britain, although they still have some areas in Cyprus under their power! Imagine, we are in 2008, and another EU member still owns territory in another EU member!!!

I suppose that you know that in 1974 the island was divide by 2...

I'm not an expert in the history of Cyprus.

Wikipedia could be a start:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Cyprus

Nevertheless, I don't agree with some of the other answers. Cyprus doesn't belong to the Greeks or Turks. Cyprus belongs to the Cypriots.

It belongs to Cyprus citizens. North and south now.

We cant decide it by looking the history. Because all Mediterranean was belongs to us.

Cyprus had a Greek population, much like many of the coastal towns and regions of Anatolia, throughout its history. It became a British colony (I believe, but may be mistaken) in the 19th century. Around 1961 it gained its independence, the same time when many other British colonies were gaining their independence, and became a commonwealth. The country did have a small Turkish Cypriot population, and during an attempted coup d'etat in the mid 70s, supported by the Greek military junta, Turkey quickly invaded the northern part of the island. A diaspora quickly followed as Greek Cypriots were removed from the northern third of the island and the Turks claimed this section of Cyprus. Turkey has since colonized this section of the island in the last 35 years, although the Greek majority of the island do not recognize this Turkish Cypriot as a legitimate presence in their country.

p.s. Greece does not control the ethnically Greek Cypriot. It is an independent nation within the E.U., "the Republic of Cyprus".

Turkey controls about 3 percent of the island, and is the only nation that recognizes "Turkish Cypriot". The other 97 percent is recognized by the rest of the international community as the (ethnically Greek) Republic of Cyprus.

Turkish army is stuck there because of a dinosaur cypriot president who vetoed the UN resolution. Disrespecting UN decision is something that would have been done by former Yugoslavia, genocide Rwanda and Nazi germany. They all ended up in ruins.

Half of the island belongs to the Turks, as stated in the London and Zurich agreements signed in 1959 by both the Greeks and Turks. the agrement states that the Turkish and Greek communities on the island are equal founders of Cyprus.

The Greek fascists however, tried to wipe the Turks off from the island beginning right after the agreements. The Greek terrorist group, Eoka, murdered more than 1000 of Turkish civilians between 1960 and 1974. Then came the Acritas plan of the bloody orthodox priest, Makaraios, which proposed the complete cleansing of the Turks.

Turkey, responded to the genocide on the island by an armed operation in 1974 based on her rights of guarantorship in the Zurich and London agreements. Then the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus formed.

here you can see the photographic evidence of the murders by EOKA

Cyprus was conquered by the Ottomans in 1571. It was taken from the Venetians who were also oppressing the Greek-speaking Orthodox Christians on the island. The Ottomans settled many Turks on the island. In 1878, the island was rented to Britain on the condition that the British would help the Ottomans against Russia. The island was to be returned to the Ottomans. However, when the Ottomans allied with Germany in 1914, Britain annexed the island and a lot of Turks returned to Turkey.
In 1955 Greek Cypriots (GC) formed a terrorist organization called Eoka, in order to force the British out, get rid of Turkish Cypriots (TC) and unite the island with Greece (Enosis). The British played the game well by spreading hatred and enmity between GCs and TCs. TCs also formed their own underground organization to defend themselves against Eoka attacks.
In 1960 the Rep. of Cyprus was formed with the partnership of GCs and TCs (70% to 30%). Turkey, Greece, and UK became guarantors of the new state. At the end of 1963 GCs wanted to change 13 articles of the constitution. TCs did not agree. GCs started armed attacks against the TCs all over the island. TCs were forced to live in enclaves until 1974.
On July 15, 1974, a military coup, backed by Greece, overthrew the government and president Makarios. Turkey, as a guarantor convened with UK for a joint intervention to re-establish law and order. UK refused, so Turkish troops landed on the island on July 20. At the cease-fire talks in Geneva, and later by summit talks between two community leaders, it was agreed to have a population exchange. Therefore, all TCs living in the south moved to the north, and all GCs living in the north moved to the south.
Bi-communal talks continued for years to find a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution to the conflict. In 1983, TCs unilaterally declared the Turkish Rep. of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
In 2004, a UN peace plan (Annan Plan) was put to referenda. It received the approval of TCs by 65%, but was refused by 75% of GCs. Since then people can cross the border easily and travel to the other side.
TCs are not a minority but partners, and the north is not part of Turkey, nor is it under Turkish occupation. Some people want to see it that way though.
It is a very complicated issue, but we are still trying to find a peaceful solution to re unite the island in a federal republic.
