Eye Candy [x]

Did you know that Greek children are the 2nd most educated in Europe?

According to Eurostats, 55% of Greek students graduate from a 4 year University and 22% of a 2 year one, ranking Greece as the 2nd highest country with the most College graduates per capita in Europe.

Because of such a high percentage of graduates in Greece and difficult competitivity to get into a University, Greece has become the the 3rd highest country in Europe where students flock to the West to find jobs or attend Universities.

Its a good thing to be smart but if Greece continues like this noone would ever find a job and it would be even harder to get accepted to a good College! What do you think should be done about this?

What about the quality of our education ? Greece is the only country in EU where the state and the church are NOT SEPARATED.
The officially state educational politics is to melt the national minorities into Greeks. That is against the EU standards of multicultural, multi ethnics and multi religious education.
Greece is still nearly -to-junta behave: military exercises in the villages of minorities, annual army-parades, military music, right hand up salute like Nazi/fascist salutation....
I think we need European education, but not the prewar one.

EDIT: All of us know that Nazi/Fascist salutation - our domestic Macedonians here in Aegean Macedonia had seen many of yours Xitos, monarchofascistes etc. during the civil war 1945-49. Greek army NOW, in the 21st Century, has that same nazi/fascist salutation. Why ? To whom is the message sent ?
And about the military exercises in vicinity of Lerin - you can go everywhere you want, the Governmental decision is LEGAL but not LEGITIMATE !!
Why they choose our fields to be devastated by tanks, our people live from agriculture. Go on deserted islands !

I'd say that most Greek students move abroad for studies more because of the better quality of academic education that it is offered and less because they find it difficult to be accepted here. Furthermore, who would come to work in Greece and get paid only 1200 euros or so after having studied for so many years when there are far more and better job opportunities abroad?

What I think should be done in general, is a radical reformation of the greek educational system by knowledgeable and expert people, focusing on actually learning and receiving knowledge instead of rote learning which has no actual benefit and doesn't help the student to think or be productive, from kindergarten to tertiary education and invest on research so that people with studies could put their knowledge to use. There are so many Greek scientists and artists that live and work abroad simply because Greece has next to nothing to offer to them...

Sad, but true...

In Greece, I think we need more plumbers, electricians, carpenters and other hand crafted people that are already hard to find due to the fact that practically everyone aims at a desk job...

EDIT : For Teona
Can you provide an accurate link/info where the Nazi salute is used in Greece?
Are you referring to the military salute? Raising the right arm to the level of the right part of the forehead in order to salute a superior officer or a government official?
Regardless to say that this form of official salute is enforced in practically ALL the Armed Forces of ALL countries on this planet.
Does that make ALL the Armed Forces everywhere on the planet as Nazi loving Forces?

As far as the military doing drills in villages where "minorities" live... we both know what you are referring to.
Allow me to remind you the following :

a. Greek military maintains the right to perform drills ANYWHERE in its domain
b. The so called minority Village area is a drill area used by NATO as well since the early 1950ies. Perhaps you should address your complaints to NATO?
Although i doubt that a few cows in the area would be a NATO concern... but please do so... someone might have an ecological conscience over there.
c. Since you claim you are a Greek citizen, you would probably realize that Greece owes its sovereignty to the military, no more or less like ANY other country on the face of this planet.
And it is the Greek military that is entitled to parade on the day of the Great "OXI" (October 28th), in memory of the first victory over the Nazi & Co in WW2.
The same goes for our Independence Day (March 25th).
It was Independence my dear, an independence gained by force of Revolution, not Indepenence from the McDonalds empire.
If the McDonalds Independence Day ever occured, be assured that "Goody's" employees would be parading with Pit-a-Pitas on hand and no military companies would be marching.

Greece IS Europe.
Europe owes it existence to Greek influence, either you like it or not.
Take away all the influencial elements and what remains is the Dark Ages.
Simple as that.

The high number of graduated students might be the low, sub-standard criteria of the universities.

Just Another Macedonian
That's a strange way of making conclusions. Just because more students in Greece finish university, doesn't mean they are the most educated in Europe (or 2nd most educated). Quality is more important than quantity.

no. I doubt.

It is important to get education, even if you are doing a job that is considered manual. Greece has very good scientists, but not craftsmen. The people who do manual works are uneducated unspecialised workers, usually immigrants. I work in construction and I can tell you that it is almost impossible to find a good wood carver, carpenter, someone who does running moulds, etc., but I mean really good, not just someone who poorly assembles prefabricated stuff. But guess what, you can find excellent stone-marble carvers, do you know why? Because there is a school for this craft on Tinos, due to the restoration projects of ancient monuments. I have met carpenters abroad, and they need to train for about 10 years to get any skill. But they learn deeply, they have accurate technical knowledge of what they do, in an academic way. So what we need is more schools for crafts. Because it is true that a professional needs qualifications. You say "be a plumber". Sure. But to do that, you need to go become the helper of a plumber to learn from experience. That is not what a young skilful person desires. I wouldn't want to be the tool-carrier of a stone carver, but I would like to become a stone-carver myself. So if they go to a good school, they will become good craftsmen.

Teona, Greece has NEVER used the fascist salutation. The army salutes by bringing their hand to the forehead, and the reason is that they salute the cross of the flag on the hat. They don't even do the salute when they are not wearing a hat. As for the education quality, I don't know how old you are, but when I was at school, it was up to me to be lazy and learn nothing or to work and acquire an extreme wealth not only of knowledge but also culture. You have to take my word for it, this has been acknowledged everywhere, universities abroad, etc., and I think even at Y!A even users who do not agree with me on many issues don't consider me uneducated. Well, I have to thank my school for that, University too, family too, even frontistirio, but mostly at school I received the bases for my education.

Which country is the first?

Maybe the rest of the world should step it up.

Yes. I've read this before, also 11 of the 13 Greek regions are to be found in the TOP 25 European regions with the largest educational shares of HRST(Human Resources in Science and Technology) population, the core group of this population — also known as HRSTC — can be considered as active stakeholders in the development of knowledge and technological innovation. In some Greek and Spanish regions more than 80% of all HRST working in the education sector belong to this core group. In fact Greek regions lead the education groups among the top eight regions in Europe exceeding 82%, Cyprus is among the top 12 regions with a 76.9%. Greece and the Netherlands showed the smallest gap (seven percentage points) between their highest and lowest regional shares of HRSTC employed in high-tech( the dispersion between the leading region and the bottom region was relatively small.) In other words Greece leads in the educational highly qualified workers occupied in science and technology. ;-)

I knew it about Greek children are the 2nd most educated.

Me,having finished (4 year) University,It wasnt hard at all to find a job.
The problem here is that children are choosing already flood jobs.

Like teachers,accountants,etc.

ANd those who dont suceed enter medicine school or law school, they prefer to study abroad than to be in another university or study one more year to pass.

We know Greek salaries,we knew them before go to study,.
I cant understand why people are complaining about low salaries.

Before I go to uni I already know the average salary and I made a research about which major will make me find right away a job and whats the best possibility of develpment in my position.

edit@Obviously Teona has attend the Fyromian schools and not the Greeks, because if she attended Greek schoold she could see the difference of a Military salute

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:USNsalute.jpg
http://www.midwaysailor.com/military/salute.jpg

and from nazi salute:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Hitler_1928.jpg

http://www.outofmyface.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/english-nazi-salute.jpg

Also, she should know that a COUNTRY can do military exercises within ITS borders (aspecially in a base that exists for many years) and any (wanabe) democratic country should NOT interfere in the neighbor's internal politics,....Obviosly Gruevski attend Fyromian schools as well.
