Do I need to wear clogs?

Forgive me for my ignorance. I will be moving to Holland for at least a year. I need to know whether or not I will be shunned/laughed at if I don't wear the wooden clogs they have there.

I have tried to wear them in preparation for my departure, but I really don't think there is any way that I can wear these things on a full-time basis.

Will people notice if I don't wear clogs? Will I be treated differently? Just what do the Dutch do when it rains? I would think that the water would swell the wood and make the shoes uuncomfortable?

By the royal decree of 1st of April 1951 (Klompenwet) all Duch nationals and residents are obliged to wear clogs. If you do not comply you will be deported to Keukenhof. You are also obliged to have available a pair of rubber or plastic gloves for the case you have to stick your finger in one of the Duch dikes in case of emergency.

No you will not be forced to wear, laughed at, or shunned for wearing clogs. You can wear whatever you want!

This is a gag, right?

The Dutch no more wear wooden shoes everywhere they go than do all Scots wear kilts every day, Japanese wear kimonos every day, or Arabs wear turbans (Arabs do NOT wear turbans, by the way). They're all cliches. The Dutch wear the same things every day that any other person in any other Western country would wear on an average day.

pffffffff
Do Americans ride on horses ? If you were clogs in the city people would look strange at you. (also the Dutch would look strange at you) Most farmers use them, I use them in the garden. But it's not common anymore to have them. Rain has no effect on the wood, most clogs are treated with paint.

Whahahahahahaha!! LOL. :-)) :-))
You tried to wear them? You're a really devoted visitor of our country!
What Dutch do when it rains? They stay inside or jump in their cars, they walk or cycle with an umbrella over their heads, wearing boots.
Believe me, only farmers wear clogs, the rest of those millions wear shoes.
But if you wanna wear clogs.......it is allowed.

Nowadays you can buy plastic ones !!!!!!!

I love your question.
Wearing those hard wooden shoes are for fun ... They will not care one bit, if you wear them or not. I would only recommend you wearing them out if you are very comfortable in them. As you will find out, Holland like any other place in Europe, has a lot of land to walk and indeed they do walk all over ... it is best to wear comfortable shoes when out. You will not be treated any different based on your shoes. When it rains, they put on their galoshes and enjoy the day.
Hope this has helped and Enjoy Holland. I know I did !

yes, by all means you must wear them else you will be banned, you also must live in a windmill and have tulips growing in your garden, eat edammer cheeze everyday, and smoke pot after work, drink heineken with your meal and eat mayonaise with your french fries, so be carefull and don't forget.

enjoy your stay

We actually had a guy working at the helpdesk in my office who wore clogs to work. He wasn't laughed at but people did look at him very strangely at first. Might have been because of his beard and fishermans outfit too, btw. (Certainly not the usual fashionable outfit for a 24 y.o.) But he was a nice guy who got on with his work so people let him be.
Actually, clogs are supposed to be very much in fashion for the coming summer. But I guess that's only the ones with the leather uppers...
;-)

no i dont think so

Oke thank you soooo much for asking that question, it really got me into a good mood:) I am dutch and I haven't even worn any clogs in my life! So I think people will be more surprised if you do wear them. I don't know where you're going to live in Holland but it's mostly farmers who still wear clogs or you can just wear wellington boots. But most people just use umbrella's when it rains. Thanks for cheering me up!

I suppose this is just a humorous question - you just want to see reactions, don't you?
(if on the other hand you do seriously ask this question, I can only answer that "yes, people i.e in Amsterdam will definitely notice and maybe laugh at you if you do wear your wooden clogs")
