Do I take Sterling, Greek Euros or Travellers cheques to Greece? |
I will be traveling with my family to the Greek Island of Rhodes early next week. I would like to know if it is best to take Greek Euros, Travellers cheques, or pounds Sterling?
I know it is much safer to take travellers cheques in case they are lost or stolen, but I always feel I'm being ripped off whenever I cash them in, even though it says we do not charge commision, you just know you are not getting a good exchange rate.
Is it better to take all Euros, all Sterling,(and exchange them out there) all travellers cheques or a combination of all three? (I am intending to take £1,500 worth of which ever one's are recommended). |

Take Euros in cash to cover you for the first night. Also take yor Nationwide card for commisson fee cash withdrawals from the ATM. |

I can tell you're concerned about the theft issue, so here are my suggestions:
I always use a combo of cash, credit cards (but check what rates they'll charge for exchange before you go), and sometimes a prepaid cash card. If you're worried about the possibility of credit card theft, a prepaid card from AmEX or Visa is great (I used one in China last year). They work like a credit card - you can use them in restaurants, shops, etc. and also in ATMs to get local currency back - and you can reload as needed, and get the same loss protection as with travellers' cheques. take a little in euros and stirling the rest its best to use your bank card in an ATM ,most reasonably sized resorts have them .
dont forget to take a note of the emergency telephone number in case you lose your card .
you get a much better exchange rate over in greece so just take enough stirling for the outgoing airport and for coming back and enough euros for a day or two once there .
you can take travellers cheques in euros but ive found them a pain to use and you get a bad exchange rate even though they are very safe .
if your worried there might not be ATM near you take couple of hundred in stirling cash and change it over in greece . |

All three of the above! And a visa card too.
It really is good to have some local cash (euros) with you on arrival, and you will getter a better price in UK than you are likely to find soon after arrival - although when you get a chance to look around, you can probably find a better rate for further exchange out there. (Sometimes the minimum commission makes it better to change more at a time.) Your travellers cheques provide a safe fund for your reserve. But the sterling is good to have too because lots of shops know the exchange rate and will take pounds, so that's handy if you have a spur of the moment purchase you want to make. But take a visa credit card too, because they give a good exchange rate and the card is useful for eg car hire, and saves having to take so much in cash or travellers cheques. Also, you can get cash on a credit or debit card if needed, and that also saves having to change so much into travellers cheques. (There may be no ATMs taking your debit card, and banking hours may be very different from UK, so check them!) |

I would take a mixture of Euro's in cash and Sterling travellers cheques because of the amount you are taking. Do not travel with that sort of cash. |

Take you Debit card and use the ATM. Just about anything you do is going to cost you one way or the other as far as rate of exchange goes.

Take Euros. If you have to go to a cash machine, you will probably pay a lot more then if you just take Euros. |

Suggest you take Euros because Greece is very much a part of the Eurozone and that's the only currency that will be accepted at all places. Of course, you can also use your credit card.
As a frequent traveler, I take all three- cash, credit cards and traveler checks, though I agree that checks often turn out to our disadvantage in exchange rates. The reason is that in case I lose my cash and credit cards due to any unforeseen circumstances or am robbed- I still can depend on my traveler checks. |

They're not "Greek" Euros they're just Euros.
I would take Sterling T/C's if you dont go abroad a lot. |

I suggest that you take a few ounces of gold with you and then you can convert it into whatever currency you wish when you arrive. |
