Additional Details My Turkish friend says her culture is very emotional. So if you express your feeling more, being happy, sad, angry etc., are you respected more than if you kept your feelings reserved?

Yes we do. You know 'turk' is used to describe young restless emotional people in english. But this doesn't mean that you can act like a cry-baby. especially if you are a male the traditional turkish culture says you should hide your pain and don't bother anybody. but between real friends you can talk everything and you will get all the help you may need.
Young Turks nowadays, especially the ones that live in big cities, are well educated and not much different from people living in Europe or the States.
Answer to your question changes from person to person not from country to country. For me (I am a Turkish woman) I would respect someone man enough to cry. |

I think your friend couldnt express her/himself to you. Its not about respect. I think s/he was trying to say, comparing to other cultures, Turkish people are more heartfelt and expressive about their feelings. But this is coming from our more societal/less individual-personal culture. Its becoming more personal-individual day by day.
PS: Keyser, please stop posting that unreal racist messages. We dont have that kind of a problem with Armenian people. most of our Armenian citizens are living just like you and me here. Of course there are some who have some hostility about Turkey but i have never heard that kind of problem you told. Those robbers are not Armenian. Most of them are kurdish, and it is a too long story to tell here... |

notwithstanding the fact that you racially "generalize" an entire nation for your racist subtext ...
I can tell you that "true and honest" expression of one's own ideas & feelings can be welcome as long as those ideas and feelings are not based on spreading hatred
- which, a little, look like your question here |

It depends, some Turks may like it some may not. I would not respect a person more than he deserves just because he expresses his emotions freely. I must say I hate violent displays of emotion, even if the emotion is a positive one. I also don't like when someone talking to me in an overly-familiar tone, asking me too many personal questions that are not their business or asking me for a favour as if I had known them for years because, although they might just be trying to be friendly, I like to keep my distance. |

Turkish folk music is pretty "emotional" in a depressing way.
The summary of every Turkish folk song:
I love her but she does not love me
Why doesn't she love me?
I love her!
Still pretty good, though |

Well, girls share feelings and experiences among themselves. This is common and accepted. If you stay away, you might be suspected of being cold and sneaky.
I guess guys share time, but not feelings. I can't be sure, but it seems that way to me.
Girls and guys can share office gossip and talk behind their common boss, but they rarely share feelings.
Of course, these are just generalizations and exceptions happen. |

In some cultures, various forms of emotional displays can seem much.
I'd have a hard time making a scene about anything & everything. Seems tiring too.
I respect people who mind their own business. |
